What is Calling All Innovators?
Forum Nokia’s Calling All Innovators competition is a global developer program that challenges mobile and web application developers to submit best-in-class applications and ideas for use on Nokia devices. It’s a big group; Forum Nokia is the world’s largest mobile developer network, with more than four million registered members.
Applications and ideas for the 2009 Calling All Innovators competition can be submitted to four categories:
- Internet Innovation – developers can submit either web applications known as Web Runtime widgets, or websites which are optimized for mobile browsing with Nokia devices.
- Flash – developers should submit their best applications that expand the capabilities of Flash Lite on Nokia devices.
- Emerging Markets and Mobile Necessities – developers are encouraged to submit their most innovative application using Nokia platforms, ranging from SMS through Series 40 and S60 device platforms. All applications will be evaluated, including those developed using Java, Python or open source.
- Apps on Maps – In this category, developers can submit new ideas (completed apps are not necessary at this stage) that harness the power of location-aware services using Ovi Maps on Nokia devices.

Past winners are already reaping the rewards! X Dancery won last year and the app pre-loaded on the highly popular Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in China. It’s such a cool app, it is a music game where players can touch the screen, draw patterns on the screen, shake the device or sing into it to hit the music tempo notes.
- The Nokia N97 just launched globally, creating a myriad of opportunities for developers. Imagine all of the applications that can be developed on this device that defines the mobile internet experience.
- So far this year, we’re seeing more submissions utilizing Twitter and other innovative apps and ideas built for online collaboration and social networking.
- For the Flash category, two awards are twice as nice! The Open Screen Project Fund (announced by Nokia and Adobe), are coordinating submissions and most importantly the prize opportunities.
- Aside from the cash prizes, this is an opportunity to reach millions of consumers through Nokia’s massive global reach - premium placement of the winning App on Ovi Store – and possible pre-load on future Nokia devices.
Finalists will be announced on August 17 and they get a FREE trip to Nokia World in Stuttgart, Germany in early September. The winner will be announced at a special ceremony at Nokia World.
