In All About Symbian Insight 70 (AAS Podcast 128) Steve and Rafe talk about the upcoming N97 and the return of Comes with Music to the UK. However the main part of the show is taken up with answering questions from listeners. We touch on Ovi Store, Nseries branding, screen resolution and more. You can listen to AAS Insight 71 here or, if you wish to subscribe, here's the RSS feed.
In this podcast we cover:
Comes with Music back in the UK
Nokia N97 interactive demo, awaiting the N97...
Q: Share on Ovi and reasons for its failure?
Q: With devices such as the 5800 already biting into Nseries territory perhaps the Nseries' time has passed already? Is it time for Nokia to drop or replace the Nseries concept?
Q: QVGA screens in 2009 seems like a travesty, in the light of 100 competitors with much bigger screens - what do you think?
Q: 20000 items rumoured for Ovi Store, what % will be apps what % will be new apps?
Q: Upcoming S60 5th edition phones? (not N97) (a.k.a. Rafe ties himself in knots trying not to talk about rumours).
Bored of all the biased comments by Rafe. He is definitely a Nokia fanboy... Finds excuses no matter what Nokia does.

I'm not an EE, but something you said strikes me as wrong. How is a higher resolution screen significantly more power-hungry? I was told that most of the power of a LCD screen goes into the backlighting, and that should be the same for, say, a 2.8" screen whether it's QVGA or VGA.

Well I'm bored by all the cr*p negative remarks made by unregistered!
Why not have the courage of your convictions, grow a set of b*lls and logon to post...?

I already have a growing set of bills, thank you, and that's why I don't want to spend the little money I have left on an expensive and antiquated phone like the N97. :D
Jaggz
Hey guys. Thanks for answering my question (the one about Nseries). I may not always agree with Nokia's strategy, and I'm not convinced that Symbian Foundation will play an integral part in the next level of personal computing, but I am a massive fan of All About Symbian!
Rafe
It's probably worth saying that on a personal level I'd like to see things like better specifications, higher resolution screen etc etc.
However it tends to fall to me to explain why Nokia's does thing the way it does, where as Steve and Ewan have the voice of the (high-end) consumer.
It's easy to say something should better (yes we always want better stuff), but it does not always make business sense to do so.
Jaggz - indeed - there's plenty to criticize about Nokia's strategy. I think a lot of it is about implementation though. i.e. easy to comment, less easy to do.
rvirga - yes you're right, power usage isn't proportional to screen screen size, but it does increase. The main issue, in terms of S60, is the support (or not) for it in the software platform. That's the main reason we haven't seen higher res screens on S60 3.2. Will change with the next release - VGA support is added.
Arthur
Yes, QVGA=UTTER FAIL. It's 2009, time for Nokia to end its' love affair with qvga screens.
And finding excuse for everything that Nokia does is getting tiresome.
It seems that Nokia's strategy is to abandon the power user market and shove S60 down people's throats at every opportunity. How about a proper replacement for the tablet or the E90?
