How to: Get Nokia Messaging

Hi Asri,

In the latest AAS podcast, Steve, Rafe and Ewan mentioned sometime about payments for the use of Nokia Messaging. Probably all will be free except for the push email part.
Do you have any sight on the cost for this?

1. Nokia Messaging will be offered as a paid service in the future.

2. Some telcos like SingTel in Singapore, already offering Nokia Messaging (rebranded as SingTel Mobile M@il Plus) as a service bundled together with Nokia E63 with a flat rate monthly data plan.

3. For E75, Nokia Messaging subscription _FOR LIFE_ is included. E75 users are also paying for Nokia Messaging price. This is for E55 & E52 as well.

4. This means, Nokia will offer it as a multichannel paid service.

5. Maybe someone from Nokia Messaging team could comment on the future plan? ;-)

You'll also see Nokia Messaging available on other new Nokia devices (though the subscription will not necessarily be included).

For example recent firmware updates have added it to the N96, N85, N79 (albeit an earlier version). Added is, perhaps, not the right word - what's actually done is the SIS file is included (on the memory card) and can installed when you run the Nokia Email Wizard (the one accessible from the homescreen, and settings in Messaging). Of course as far as the user is concerned everything can be done from the device.

Going forward I would expect all S60 (and some Series 40) devices to have this.

Hopefully Nokia will make the cost stuff clear.

Other operators taking on Nokia Messaging include Orange, and A1 (there's more too, and imagine more on the way).

I hope that in the official nokia messaging 2.0 with MfE integrated, it'll use a lower memory footprint then if you'd use them as disparate subsystems now. My n95-1 with its measly 48mb or something of memory only had memory in the single digits with all that stuff loaded, so i have been using the System Seven product to do my exchange+gmail imap. At least with that loaded, i still have ram in the mid-high teens.

I wanted to specify my own domain when using NMM, but it won't let you. Any work a rounds?

1. During the official E75 launch event in Malaysia, the General Manager, Vlasa Berka told media that Nokia Messaging will be a standard feature for future S60 and S40.

2. I used System Seven before and there are some areas where Nokia Messaging needs to learn from System Seven. For example, Sytem Seven has a small green indicator on the Standby Screen to give notify users about the connection.

If I download and install Nokia Messaging, does it replace the already pre-installed messaging program on the Nokia E90? If I press the MESSAGE key on the keyboard, which messaging program will open? The pre-installed program on the E90 or the new Nokia Messaging?

I've been umming and ahhing about whether to get this for a little while - and I've got 3 questions:

1. I previously read about problems with access point choice - people were saying that once installed, this app stuck with the original data point. Unhelpful if you wish to switch between work and/or home wi-fi and your 3G connection when out and about. Anyone know if this is still an issue?

2. What happens to the email part of the S60 messaging application if you install this? Does is disappear or could it be used in parallel with Nokia Messaging? (Basically, if I have a problem, is my trusty and working current solution going to be lost?) - edit : sorry, just realised that the previous poster asked this question too, but it still stands...

3. I have an unlimited data tariff in the UK - but I'm in the USA for the next ten months for work. I'm using my N82 with a cheap PAYG American SIM whilst over here (it doesn't support GPRS and the 3G bands are different here), whilst my UK SIM sits in a cheap unlocked phone for SMS purposes. Anyone see any problems with me installing the Nokia Messaging app on the N82 whilst over here?

1. No. Nokia Messaging wont replace the built-in S60 Messaging in your E90

2. Nokia Messaging is developed for email (and instant messaging in the future) while the built-in S60 Messaging main usage is for text messages (SMS) and MMS.

3. By default, the Message button on E90 will open the built-in S60 Messaging.

4. Like I said previously in my other thread, the name Nokia Messaging is confusing. Why they dont use something like Nokia Mail or Nokia Connect or Nokia Email?

1. This is not true. You can change the Access Point in Nokia Messaging easily. You can do this inside Nokia Messaging (current version 9.0.43) by pressing Settings -> General -> Service Info -> Access Point. Take a look at this screenshot :



2. However, when you configure Nokia Messaging for the first time, you are not given any choice to choose Access Point. It will use the default one. In my opinion, this is one area where Nokia Messaging can improve and give users an option to select Access Point during setting up NM.

1. Nothing happen to S60 Messaging after you install Nokia Messaging. You can use SMS, MMS, and even email inside S60 Messaging as usual. They can be used in parallel with Nokia Messaging because both are completely different applications.

1. Here's what I understand :
- You can use Nokia Messaging in your N82 in manual mode.
- You can define a WLAN Access Point.
- The "push" function wont work outside the WLAN coverage area.
- In manual mode, whenever you want to check your email, just press "Sync" icon to retrieve emails.
- Anything else I overlooked? ;-)

2. Unless you can get the data part working for the PAYG American SIM, you wont be able to use Nokia Messaging in all its potential.

3. And if you plan to change the Access Point regularly in Nokia Messaging, you can do that at your own convenience.

No - I don't think so. Pretty comprehensive reply and you've reassured me enough to go for this. Thanks a lot for your help!

Actually this hasn't worked for me. Downloaded the application from S60 web as per the article's instructions which went fine.

But the installation didn't go to plan. It spent 45 mins 'testing network connections' using an MMS access point not the wi-fi one (no choice offered as mentioned before) then asked for my email address and password before connecting via wi-fi to get the email settings and then setting up a new mailbox in the ordinary Messaging app - just above the one I set up myself when I got the phone!

Any ideas? Not possible without the network connection via the SIM itself? No big deal if I have to stick with what I've got. Just thought it was worth trying out....

I have a problem with nokia messaging. I can receive mails but not send. With the normal mail client i had to set the smtp server to that of my service provider(smtp.online.no) and not my email provider(smtp.start.no). But nokia messaging won't allow me to set it manually.
Any thoughts?

Is there any way to manually set up IMAP and have it download selected folders. I have tried, tried, tried, and tried. Did I mention that I tried?

After a lot of trial & error, I've finally got a really great functional email program, and it's not Nokia Messenging.

Can I make a small suggestion to anyone thinking about paying a subscription for Nokia Messenging: DON'T DO IT!

Or before you do, at the very least try PROFIMAIL - It works faultlessly on both my E90 and E71, fully supports everything I need it to (including SMTP authorisation - why did it take me so long to discover that...?) and is regularly updated by the developers, Lonely Cat Games.

Go on, try it, you know you want to.

1. I understand your frustration. However, like I always said, Nokia Messaging is still in development stage and there are lots of things need to be ironed out.

2. Please dont give up. I want to share something with you. Delete the account that you just created (use S60 Messaging - Options -> Settings -> Email -> Delete account). Then, setup your Nokia Messaging, enter the following email address : 1@2.cc and follow the onscreen instruction. It will say "email address unrecognised" or something like that and it will prompt you to enter your email POP/IMAP server. And you must press "Yes" when it asks for Automatic delivery. It can be changed to manual later. If this fails to setup your email account in Nokia Messaging, let me know.

1. Go to http://email.nokia.com

2. Login using your Nokia Messaging account.

3. There's an option to Edit your account. You can specify your SMTP server.

4. You can also set different SMTP on the device but that would require you to delete the email address first from inside Nokia Messaging.

Please try this and let me know.

3. I have assisted friends and clients to configure IMAP folders in Nokia Messaging for different emails (gmail, yahoo, and also a their own domains) and so far, they can sync IMAP folders without problem.

2. Errr... Nokia Messaging is still free at the moment. The plan to make it a paid service is not implemented to all parts of the world yet. So, what's wrong in trying free stuff ;-) And help improving it? ;-)

1. Yes. Profimail is an excellent product. And there are choices out there. For email, there's Profimail, System Seven, Emoze, Mail For Exchange, RoadSync and now we have Nokia Messaging. Choices are good for us! ;-)

I have had MfE first installed, than I downloaded Nokia Messaging, and there wasn't a function like to setup an exchange/corporate mailbox... I guess I need to remove both application and re-install only NMessaging... Is this true?

It's not a problem I am happy with both, MfE for corporate, NM for gmail.
The only problem is with the NM that it doesn't sync automatically, I need to sync every time manually, if I would like to send an e-mail, or check if there is something new.
Within MfE you can setup 15 minutes for example, which a good option for me too. I would be nice to have in NM too.

And an other issue, that I don't have send meeting req. anywhere, and cannot accept meetings mailed to me, and arrives in MfE... Any idea?
I have a full synced calendar with my corporate exchange, but to send and accept a meeting is not available...

Thanks for the help. After multiple tries I have come to the conclusion that Nokia Mail is not compatible with Apple's MobileMe service. I can config the mail settings just fine and it will go and get the normal Inbox, Sent, Drafts, etc... from the IMAP server, but it simply will not get the remaining mailboxes. I have done refreshes, re-syncs, etc... but nothing works. However, with the same config info ProfiMail works flawlessly. Nokia could learn a thing or two from them.

I think the real problem is that Me and Nokia Messaging are not compatible. I can get the thing to act as a quasi-pop mail solution in that the normal boxes appear as well as one or two additional mail boxes but it does not appear that I can get all of the mailboxes to appear. ProfiMail has no problem at all.

1. Have you tried the following? :
- In your S60 phone, go to Application Launcher aka Menu
- Select "Email Setup"
- When it asks you to enter your email address, enter the following "1@2.cc"
- It will say it doesnt recognise the email address, and will prompt you to enter the POP/IMAP server.

2. After you have set your me.com email using this, go to your Nokia Messaging account using desktop browser http://email.nokia.com

3. Click on "Edit Setting" next to the me.com email.

4. There's a setting to sync IMAP folder.

Let me know how this goes.

I tried your method. I can set up the mailbox but it will not get the other folders that I have set up. I can get to them via ProfiMail but not any Nokia software.
