Google StreetView hits the UK and Netherlands
Published by Steve Litchfield at 8:08 UTC, March 19th 2009
Google has flipped the switch on StreetView for the UK and The Netherlands. At least, it has if you live in one of a dozen or so major cities. Reading isn't included (sob), but London, Bristol, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cambridge, Sheffield and a number of others are all present and correct (see coverage map in full story). Comments and additions welcome if you'd like to try your home city.
You can access StreetView by moving the pointer to the appropriate street, pressing the D-pad in (or tap and hold on 5800), and choosing StreetView.

StreetView is part of Google Maps 2.3 (onwards, latest is v3.0), of course. See m.google.com for the download.
StreetView is now also available in the web version of Google Maps.

The coverage is currently limited to selected cities, but will increase in time:

Just had a quick play around with this for Manchester and it's revealed a huge shortcoming - the photo's are all taken from a road vehicle, so all the pedestrian streets aren't available (and there's a heck of a lot of those) - I'd suspect that the same holds true for all the other cities?
The time I'm most likely to use streetview is when I'm physically walking around a town, it's not much use if I can only get streetviews for streets with vehicular access.

Works fine on my phone, but I can't see how to invoke it on the website on my PC.

Aaahhh... you have to drag the little man onto the map. Not particularly intuitive.

Works great on my iPhone, cheers for the heads up Steve!

Streetview accessed on the web lets you zoom in
Streetview on your phone doesn't let you zoom in - as far as I can see on the 5800.
