New Developer Tools From Symbian To Help Optimise Your Code

Published by at

Developer tools are featuring widely at this year's Symbian Smartphone Show, with two tools now available to help you code your Symbian applications. The Symbian Analysis Workbench (SAW) helps developers track down defects in code and help in the optimisation process. Built around a pre-packaged set of tools for Eclipse and is integrated into the Carbide C++ Developer Environment. The ARM Profiler aids the development process, providing clear information to help add enhanced function and, more importantly, reduce power consumption.

Mobile operating systems are inherently complex, dealing with my restrained resources, both physically (screen size and input) as well as design choices that impact on software. By providing tools that are designed to help developers integrate quickly and easily into the software hooks provided by Symbian OS, the complexity is hidden (to a certain extent) allowing those developers to concentrate on their own ideas and implementation; leading to shorter development cycles, more competent and robust applications, and eventually providing a consistent and safe environment for the end user.

From the press releases.

Symbian Analysis Workbench
SAW is a pre-packaged set of Eclipse-based tools that make life easier for developers by optimising Symbian C++ software via graphical views integrated into the Carbide C++ development environment. SAW offers analysis, profiling and target management tools in a combined suite, allowing developers to understand software behaviour using reports for trace events, resource usage and system behaviour within a single workspace.

ARM Profiler
Tthe ARM Profiler enables developers of mobile phone applications running on Symbian OS to add enhanced features and reduce power consumption. Developers can quickly and accurately target their optimisations with immediate feedback on actual application performance and with the rapid identification of bottlenecks across a broad range of performance measurements, bringing their applications to market faster and with lower risk.
