Nokia tops Greenpeace's Greener Electronics Guide

Published by Rafe Blandford at 14:53 BST, September 23rd 2008

Greenpeace has released the 9th Edition of its 'Guide to Greener Electronics'. The latest edition sees Nokia reclaim its number one ranking with a score of 7 out of 10. It leads ahead of Samsung on 5.7, Sony Ericsson on 5.3 and Motorola on 3.7. Greenpeace says Nokia's improved ranking is largely down to improved take-back practices in India.

You can see a further break down of Nokia's score in this PDF. It suggests Nokia has more work to do in the area of recycling and using recycled plastics in its phone. Sony Ericsson is also weak in the recylcing area, but scores very well in the chemicals criteria section. Samsung has good all round scores, but this its score includes contributions from its more all of its consumer electronics products.

"First launched in August 2006 and now in its 9th edition, the Guide ranks the leaders of the mobile phone, computer, TV and games console markets according to their policies and practices on toxic chemicals, recycling and energy."

If you go to the Nokia India website, then click on Support and then Repair & Recycle, then select the Recycle tab, you'll find this page:

Basically it says that if you want to recycle a phone just take it to any Nokia care centre. There's also a link to find the nearest care centre:
