Ovi Share Gets Geotagging

Published by Steve Litchfield at 19:07 UTC, May 12th 2008

Nokia's Ovi Share just acquired geotagging! From now on, any new images that are uploaded will get their EXIF data checked for location information. As you can see if you read below the break, this means that images can be automatically addressed and mapped. This brings Ovi Share into the same ballgame as Flickr and Picasa Web. Comments welcome on what's needed next in Ovi Share.

Here's an image from a trip to London, correctly addressed by Ovi Share and correctly mapped:

Screen grab - Ovi Share geotagging

Is there a way to display all media from a trip overlaid on a larger map? If so, please forgive my naiveity and share the info!

Verrrry cool! Can you e.g. invite a friend, and have the welcoming page be a map of the globe (or a region) with little needles tucked to it, and have him/her click them to see where you've been and view the pics?

You know, rather them having to click on a ton of pics and then see them mapped.

I agree, plus like Steve said we need a bigger map!

I'll also like to see:

- Ability to open Images in a new window; makes for much easier browsing.

- A decent desktop uploader that can preferably give me a right click ‘Send To’ option.

Hardly new. That worked weeks ago if I remember correctly. Also Ovi's mobile website renders your movies (mp4 at least) into 3G versions for their mobile site. Simply wonderful!

Well, it may have worked for you, but my geotagged images weren't correctly shown when I tried it last week. All working fine now though. My renewed check was prompted by the Ovi Share team announcing that they have in fact implemented EXIF location importing at the Where 2.0 conference.

Vaibhav: It's kind of a heavy app, but Nokia Photos 1.1 (http://nokia.com/photos) supports direct uploading to Share on Ovi together with tags and location info.
