BBC Mobile gets a big overhaul

Published by Steve Litchfield at 19:03 UTC, March 11th 2008

BBC's mobile web site, much loved by all, has had a big facelift, with plusher micro-graphics by default and a more modern design, driven by the fact that the Beeb recognised that data costs had come down a lot and that they didn't have to be quite so minimalist anymore. Screenshots and the link below.

On your smartphone, it's enough to go to www.bbc.co.uk - the mobile site is automatically served up. The old minimalist design is also available if you want it (click on 'Preferences' at the bottom of the home page). And for the first time, you can set the full desktop version as your home page, which should please Nokia E90 users.

Here are some screenshots of the new default mobile site:

The video bits come down as 3GP, by the way, and should work on any mobile. As you drill down into the site, the formatting starts to become plainer and more familiar:

What?! this is a shocker...the BBC extracting themselves from thier little love in with the iPhone/iPod and actually serving the MAJORITY of thier licence payers?

This is a complete suprise seeing as last year they trialed a daily news video podcast that was only availiable via iTunes (unless you imported it into iTunes and got the rss feed data from there seeing as there was no reason to limit it to iPods in the first place apart from laziness) or thier exclusive iPhone/IPod Touch radio interface and last weeks anouncement of the iPhone iPlayer pages and video streaming. Their excuse for that? They needed handsets that had a web browser so they didn't need to build a client...last I checked most Symbian phones and Windows Mobiles had browsers so try again BBC.
