The best camera-toting smartphone in the world

Published by Steve Litchfield at 16:27 UTC, January 23rd 2008

Here's the first part of Rafe's definitive review of the Nokia N82 , looking at the form factor, the connectivity and (of course) the camera. Loads of close-up and sample photos and masses of considered opinions. Watch this space for part 2, coming shortly!

"The recently announced Nokia N82 is an impressively specified device. With a 5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, S60 software suite and WiFi, Bluetooth and 3.5G connectivity it boasts a feature set to match the flagship Nokia N95 8GB. However, the N82 has a greater focus on its camera, thanks to its Xenon flash. Its price point and smaller size suggest it may have a broader market than the expensive N95 8GB."

Thanks for this, the extra info on some on cameraphone limitations was great.

Seems like someone forgot to replace '[LINK]' with an actual link...

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/revie...N82_Review.php

"Personally I feel this is good design trade off, and as this YouTube video points out [LINK],"

Also, something is missing from this sentence :

"...have less keypad space that similar slider or flip form factor models."

Furthermore, this statement doesn't seem to be correct :

"Some areas of the UI on the N82 have slightly less information displayed on screen than the N95 - 5 versus 6 Active Idle shortcuts and 5 versus 6 menu list items (e.g. in Gallery) are good examples."

since the images right below it show the N82 with 6 Active Idle shortcuts (not 5). Perhaps you meant, "6 versus 7", or did I misunderstand something?

Does AAS need copy editors? :-)

All fixed, thanks. In our defense, we were up against a self imposed deadline and it was a LOT of words. And Rafe was supposed to fill in the link when he added the pics 8-)

You took this out completely? I think it's a valid observation, even though it should be '6 versus 7' instead of '5 versus 6'....

..anyway :)

Sorry guys - this was my fault. Apologies that these mistakes slipped through, we do our best, but these things happen (as Steve says we generally try and turn things around quite quickly - possibly a lesson in there - but producing fresh original content day in day out does take time).

I made some corrections. You were right about the number if icons. It is 6 vs 7 and 5 vs 6 respectively. I've also tried to clarify the other points too (i.e. there's generally less keypad space on candy bars because of the attributes of the form factor).

One more thing....
"Viewfinder grid is the only addition, it places gridlines on the screen horizontally and vertically, dividing the screen into thirds. This helps you compose photos according to the rule of thirds principle."

My N95 already has this. So it isn't entirely unique to the N82.

"The N82 represents a welcome return to candybars for the Nseries, which remains, globally, the most popular device form factor."

Dear ed., Nseries isn't the most popular device form factor as the sentence above suggests. It's the candybar which is a form factor. :-)

Dear oh dear, when did our esteemed readership suddenly get so very picky over grammar. Sigh. Oh well, I'll fix this too....

Nokia Photos has been released officially (it's no longer a beta). You can get it at: http://nokia.com/photos

Hi. Is it true that the n82 has navi wheel hardware but nokia have disabled this. I know that originally the phone should have had one and nokia released videos showing it. Is it possible that it could be enabled with a software update. Has anyone taken apart an n82 and spotted the hardware.

For all the good reviews the camera on this phone has gotten, the camera settings (white balance, EV, ISO, flash always on/off, etc.) revert to default once you close the camera.

Who would buy a digital camera that did that? Of course this unit is a phone, not a camera, but at this level of sophistication (xenon flash, lens cover, autofocus, all the options available albeit temporarily) it is a killjoy not to be able to control the camera effectively.

can n82 support the newly announced 16gigs microSD?
