Nokia Internet Radio goes all official

Nokia has announced an official beta of 'Internet Radio', curiously only initially officially compatible with the N95 variants, N82 and N91. It works brilliantly and immediately, with no fiddling with (or searching the 'net for) Shoutcast playlists and comes with a full directory of hundreds of compatible stations. With hundreds of internet radio stations to choose from worldwide, the station directory of Nokia Internet Radio makes music discovery effortless - browsing can be done based on station name, genre, country or language. To find out what hits are hot around the world, hourly updates of the top ten most popular internet radio stations are also available in the station directory. Plus, there is no need to search for your top stations time and again because adding them to the list of 'Favorites' makes them easily accessible.
Moreover, the audio quality is enhanced by selecting appropriate streaming servers that match the speed of the current network connection.
The Nokia Internet Radio application is currently available for download to the following devices: Nokia N82, Nokia N91, Nokia N95 and Nokia N95 8GB. The application is planned to be available later on further devices and will be embedded in selected upcoming Nokia S60 3rd edition devices. We've seen it with N-Gage, Music Store, Video Manager and goodness knows what else.
It's really annoying, and it makes a mockery of S60 providing a common platform.
Why is it that third party developers can provide launch releases for literally dozens of S60 3rd models, yet Nokia's releases so often have some caveat that they only work with two or three models?
I don't buy this idea that it sells phones because most people aren't aware of these additional services when they buy their phone. What's more, with things like N-Gage and the Music Store they need every single customer they can get if they want to make them viable profitable services.

the N91 version works on my E61i, with one proviso: the soft keys are back to front. The legend for the left key appears below the right key and vice versa.
EDIT: Correction: the legends for the soft keys are ninety degrees out of place. The left legend is above the right key and the right legend is in the top right hand corner of the screen. This is probably a consequence of the e61i's landscape screen layout. May confuse a stupid person...

^^ Yep, it sure is annoying. Personally I've been waiting for an open Linux alternative to Symbian 9.x for ages, but:
1) Alot of promises have been made, but nothing has reached the consumer market yet.
2) Symbian phones have such great hardware features... And I predict it will take manufacturers of Linux phone quite some time to reach Nokia's standard...

Options --> Add station manually can be used if you know the station's streaming server address.

What's frustrating is that these services COULD work on all (or almost all) S60 3rd devices, there's nothing technically to stop that. Why doesn't Nokia acknowledge this?
Incidentally, I can highly recommend Nokia's internet tablet series, especially now that it's getting an OS upgrade. They don't work with the phone network directly, but you can use a mobile as a Bluetooth modem for the tablet.

F*** Nokia! Maps, Mail for Exchange and more and more apps are artificially limited to the latest models to force you buy new hardware despite the same S60 v3 platform!

Yes, volume is nice and loud. On the compatibility issue, I think it's a case of "we've tested it on these devices, others may not work (yet)" - give them some time etc.

This is a great app on my N95. I used to use virtual radio but thats gone now. All I have to do is add the sky.fm channels which strangly are not included in the channel list.
Im sure some software companies will be very annoyed though!!!

Do you find it odd that the theme doesn't match the system theme? I can't think of any other Nokia aplication that do this.....

On another note, one great feature of this new version is that it recognizes .pls files. If you had the old Nokia Internet Radio application installed and had added more stations by adding .pls files to the /shoutcast folder, all you have to do to import all your stations to the new version is
- fire up Y-Browser (or any other file browser)
- navigate to the /shoutcast folder where all your .pls files are and click to open the files. This will automatically launch the new Internet Radio client and in 2 clicks you'll be able to save all the stations to your Favourites folder.
I really like when things just work like that. Make me feel than my phone is becoming more and more like my Mac and that's a good thing. Keep up the good work Nokia.

As with most of these Nokia tools, they'll be available in Download! and then eventually in device firmware - the amount of functionality built-in (or as good as) in S60 devices these days is mind boggling. You know, I just don't care that the third party software scene is bigger for (e.g.) Windows Mobile. With S60 devices as they are at the moment, I'll happily take a device, its Download! app/Nokia quota of apps and a handful of selected games. And I'm done. I just don't need a library of 10,000 third party utilities, as with WinMob.
The same happened with operating systems, of course. There was DOS and then it started to grow to encompass the functions of third party applications. Then Windows, which did the same thing. Even Windows Mobile itself is gradually getting better and more functional - very, very gradually. Nokia is making Microsoft and HTC look like snails by comparison.

An interesting point to note for E90 users:
the application won't launch at all on the internal screen but if you launch it on the external screen and then open the phone, it'll run just fine on the internal screen, albeit only in the top left corner of the screen. Once you're there, you can use the Volume keys on the keyboard to adjust the volume.
