File and folder sync hits PC Suite

Published by Rafe Blandford, Steve Litchfield at 16:56 UTC, July 4th 2007

Nokia today released a new version of its PC Suite software. New in version 6.84 is the ability to sync files between a PC and compatible phone, PC Suite will also now notify when you new add-on application become available. There are enhancements to performance and stability. More in the full story.

Files and Folder Sync is part of the Sync applet of PC Suite (also used to Sync Contacts, Calendar, Bookmarks etc.). It allows you to specify a folder on your PC to be kept in-sync with a folder on your phone. This allows you to easily use the same documents on your phone and PC (and also acts as a handy way to get multiple document files to your phone).

As you can see from the screenshot below you can specify the folder you wish to sync, whether to sync to internal or external memory on the phone and place a maximum size limit on files which are synced.

Clearly file sync is most useful if you regularly edit documents and spreadsheets on your phone, but is also useful as a general file transfer mechanism. Sync is dictated by date - it is not possible to integrate two files - the newest file (whether on phone or PC) will take precedence.

You can download PC Suite from here.

Great to see features continuing to be added to PC Suite. Folder sync is something I wanted for a while.

It's a shame all the drivers (phones etc.) have to recognised again / connections set up though. Store Images continues to grab every image in site (i.e. if you store images on your phone and want to keep them there don't use delete after copying to PC option).

At least its all very painless these days. PC Suite really has come on since the early days. Definitely one of the most under valued bits of software.

Good start.

What you really need is some more advanced options. Like:

Allowing you to map several folders, not just the one.
Select specific files, files based on extension etc.

By the way, does PC Suite let the nokianternal memory & storage appear as disks on your pc. So you can use a 3rd party file sync. tool ?

Has anyone actually tried this new version? On my N95 it only seems to sync from the phone to the PC!
Change a file on the PC, dont touch the phone, and it is over written by the phone version!
Not a lot of good, and I cant find an email address for Nokia support!
Bah!

Nokia, a big thanks to you!!!

This is something I have been dreaming of for a long time! Great that you added this feature!

Even if somenthing does not work (as it often happens with everything new), it's very good that the feature was at all implemented and I am certain that all bugs (if any) will sooner or later be removed!

I could not get the file sync to work with Toshiba bluetooth stack version 4 (even though they say it is compatible). It was saying it could not create the briefcase folder on either the phone or the memory card on my 6680. It eventually hung the bluetooth manager. Upgraded to version 5 from Toshiba Website and now works, although so far have only synced a file on the PC to an empty folder on the phone.

Beautiful! I just tried the file transfer and it worked perfectly.

I'm also pleased at the stability of the new suite.

While installing under Vista I get the following error :

Error writing to file C:\CONFIG.MSI\94FC13.RBF
VERIFIY THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THAT DIRECTORY.

On the same macine I have the previous version 6.83 working fine.

Any ideas ?

Uninstall the previous version first.

Strange - I've just updated my PCSuite software (and About confirms that I have version 6.84.10.3), but Synch Settings still only asks me which PC (i.e. email) application I want to use ... the answer to which is "None" - not an available option.

Is it only possible to get to the menu in your screenshot if you also synch with an email / address book application?

Never mind - just answered my own question: you have to skip the Wizard (an option I hadn't spotted before) ... and found that sadly the file synch is pretty simplistic, and doesn't give you any choice about which folder(s) on the phone to synch - it has to be either C:\Data\Briefcase or E:\Briefcase, so you can't use it as a way to keep all your files in synch.

Oh well, I suppose it's a step in the right direction.

Yes it synchs only one way E90 to PC unless I reboot my PC or logoff and logon my PC session. Then it works the first time and then I have to repeat the whole reboot....

FYI:

To the poster asking if anyone had actually gotten the file sync to work as described: I have not. :-)

In PC Suite Version 6.84.10.3 older files on my phone (E61) will overwrite newer files on the PC. I carefully tested this prior to actual use, fortunately.

I can only use the file sync feature to add entirely new file files to either the desktop or the phone.

There's a patch to 6.84.10.4, but it doesn't seem to have fixed the folder sync.

As you say, it's more a 'keep mirror copies of your master documents' feature than a true sync.

AVOID USING FILE AND FOLDER SYNCHRONISATION

Like a number of other people I have fallen foul of this "feature". Having synchronised files successfully for 1st time from PC to my phone I later ran it again (at the end of the day) and it overwrote the files I had modified on my PC with now out of date versions from my phone. Clearly the logic used by the application is fundamentally flawed. Don't learn the hard way like me - I lost a whole days work!
