Published by Rafe Blandford at 17:28 UTC, June 14th 2007
The new Sony Ericsson W960, announced today, is the new top of the line Walkman phone. Headline features include 8GB of flash memory (700 albums, 8000 songs), UMTS (3G) and WiFi connectivity and an autofocus 3.2 megapixel camera. The W960's software platform is UIQ 3.0 on Symbian OS 9.1. The W960 weighs in at 119g with dimensions of 109x55x16 mm and has a monoblock form factor.
In the product press release Nicklas Sivander, Product Manager for the W960 Walkman phone, says: "You couldn't ask for a better music mix of high performance media player and intuitive phone. The touchscreen is complemented by a regular keyboard and the phone itself is amplified by the Media Manager programme and the many music accessories. The days of taking an MP3 player, a camera and a phone with you when you leave the house are definitely over."
Other notable features include:
- Tri-band GSM (900, 1800, 1900) and UMTS 2100.
- 2.6 inch TFT touchscreen with 282,144 colours and 240 x 320 (QVGA) resolution.
- 128MB RAM (double that of W950's 64MB, but effectively quadruple amount of available RAM after boot 20MB vs 80 MB).
- Hardware accelerated 3D graphics and support for Open GL ES graphics (the W960 uses the same chipset as the P1i).
- Enhanced UI including extra shortcuts on the idle screen (up to 15 from 5) including a more applications shortcut.
- The ability to navigate through media stored on the phone using a stylus or your finger on the touch screen.
- The ability to transfer music from a PC at the rate 1Gb every 3 minutes thanks to USB 2.0 PC connectivity.
- Video playback at 30 frame per second full screen is al supported.
- FM Radio with RDS
- Media Manager PRO, a PC program for organising media and optimising music, video and photos for use on the W960. Media Manger will replace the existing Disc2Phone software. Media Manager features include:
- SenseMe - automatically detects the mood of music when you import it into the phone allowing you to take better advantage of the Sense filtering / playback on the phone.
- Transfer of music with automatic re-encoding if necessary and the ability to create play lists.
- Imaging helps you move images both from and to the phone. It allows you to store images captured with the camera on the phone and to send images to the phone (including resizing to optimum size for wallpapers).
- Media feed allow you to enjoy video and audio podcast on your phone.
- Support for TrackID music recognition software allowing you to record a clip of a song and instantly find out the track title, artist and the album. Furthermore TrackID has been enhanced on the W950 to provide more detailed information about the song being identified and there now support for extra searching options (e.g. a text search just giving the bands name).
- A stereo Bluetooth headset (HBH-DS220) will be included in the retail box in addition to the usual wired headset.
- A redesigned look compared to the W950 with rounder edges and more defined keypad keys. The back key has moved from the side of the device to the keypad.
- The usual range of UIQ and Sony Ericsson applications including the usual Document Viewers, Blogger, Opera Web Browser and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync email support.

We'll have a further run down of the W960 in due course.

Now I have to plan to replace my Nokia N80. This phone is great. I dont want the N95 with built in GPS as the GPS is better outside and placed on a open sky position.. I dont want my phone to get baked in the sun as well.. ;-)

No, it's the future! The difference between HSDPA and UMTS is small! In real life experience is really small! So, u can't tell me "don't buy this brilliant phone cause it don't has hsdpa!" Cause UMTS is clearly enough for all the staff! I think thats the best phone from the new walkman seria, and my words are prooven by the spec sheets.. Also by the phone's outlook(point of own view, it's different for different ppl-thats normal)
Cheers!

Oh wow.. .I'm drooling.
I kinda liked the w950i already but it had a few drawbacks - no camera, no WiFi. This just sounds/looks like it's fantastic.

Put my W950 on ebay today - couldn't get on with the keyboard.
Wonder when this will be available?

I meant it's great that they're including stereo bluetooth headphones in a sales package, wasn't commenting on the actual phone.

HSDPA versus regular UMTS?
Definitely there's a huge difference! You can't even compare regular UMTS with HSDPA as HSDPA, given you're network has good coverage, is 6 times faster...
Imagine downloading a file for only 5 minutes using HSDPA as opposed to what would have been 30 minutes with regular HSDPA...
If only this was HSDPA enable, this would be perfect. I'm not really complaning though because It already has almost everything I could ever want on a mobile :-D

RDS for the radio sounds good - I don't listen to the radio on my N80 on the train just because you have to keep twiddling the reception.

I respect other's preferences. But I still think that S60 smartphones are more productive for daily life work. It's my preference.

Hi all,
Sorry but no HSDPA on Data centric device due towards the end of 2007 is really not on especially when some of the other SE phones are getting it just makes no sense. Although i do think think it is a stunning phone lack of HSDPA and still using the same processors and graphics chip as the P1, P990, W950 and M600 this far down the road is also very disappointing. You have to wonder just how many of those blasted Nexperia chips did SE buy and when are they going to get round to getting newer chips. 90% there just 10% missing but what an important 10% it is IMO.

another SE phone that does not have joystick... even if the ph has a touchscreen, for some simple tasks, joystick is faster and easier to use.

it appears to be, from looking at the photos anyway an LED flash.
I am now torn between a p1i or the W960. the 960 does looks a lot nicer and having a normal numeric keypad might serve me better in the long run as it's what i'm used to, relearning to type might be a bit of a pain.
I hope that they keep the enhancements made in the p1i though like the RAM and stuff, it would be stupid not to though really I suppose.

Hmm... This phone really looks great, is it 950's succesor? Very compact, this is definitely a strong oint. It seems like Sony Ericsson realy knows the term "build quality".
puterman
I wonder if they mean to claim that you can actually transfer 1 gig of data in 3 minutes to this phone, or if they're just saying that that's the maximum capacity of the USB hardware. I guess it's the latter, because I doubt that you can actually write 5 megs of data a second to the flash memory.
ratza
Actually you can write a flash memory with even more than 5 megabytes per second. My USB flash is usualy written at about 8-10 MB/s.
Guess Who
You can write with even 35MB/s a SanDisk Extreme IV CF card in a SanDisk FireWire800 card reader.
Rafe
I've just updated the main story:
128 MB RAM - excellent - four times more on boot up compared to W950
Same UI improvements as P1i
UIQ 3.0 - but with performance enhanced and some 3.1 features back ported (really 3.1 was aimed at optimsing for non touchscreens).
JimH
I'm assuming this is just a restyled P1, so I'd expect to see Wi-Fi on the spec list, but there's no mention of Wi-Fi on the Sony-Ericsson pages.
So does it have Wi-Fi?
Rafe
Yes there's definitely WiFi support (SE refer to this as WLAN). I imagine it shares a lot of development with the P1i.
LosOutlandos
what a sexy phone! what seems to be missing though is a standard 3,5mm jack, even if there's a bluetooth headset supplied.

W960i has got everything that I would have dreamed about.... but NO GPS and a Low Rez QVGA... kinda not so kool.... GPS and VGA screen with 16 M Color would be My Dream Phone
