A new mobile browsing home page alternative?

Published by Steve Litchfield at 17:36 UTC, April 17th 2007

Carlo at MobHappy details a new initiative, Mowser (Mobile browser), with built-in transcoding of web sites as well as a built-in mobile-friendly directory. Well worth a look.

talking with Russ Beatie on #mobitopia, he explained that its not only a mobile portal, but really is useful as a service to websites. Specifically, to websites that dont already have a mobile site developed... So, they would include a link within their page, that a user could click, or that would be referenced in the url, and it would automatically send to mowser.com, recieve mobile treatment and be presented to the end user... Further, it can pickup the websites mobile template, and transcode the page as directed by the original site... Further, any admobs would be picked up and taken to the newly rendered page...
I said all that, but don't quote me :) This stuff is way above my head. And I/we just asked him what the point of the portal was. That's when he expounded upon the service side of the site/idea.
Really intersting stuff though, and from my limited knowledge, I could definitely see some uses for this website...
That sums up my terrible, truncated and probably very flawed information. Hopefully someone more knowledgable can come in here and append the above.

As Phonophiliac says there's far more to this than initially meets the eye, a very interesting bit of tech, Russ's mowser overview - http://mowser.com/blog/archives/7.html - gives a bit more info.

Very much worth adding to your phone's home page - http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/featu..._Home_Page.php

It certainly looks good for transcoding mobile-unfriendly pages, and it's useful as a tool for "mobilising" your own web pages too.

I don't think it's cool that Mowser inserts illegal ads into everyone's content:

@ "unregistered": I don't think it's cool to diss a site without being brave enough to use your real name.

As for "illegal ads on everyone's content":

1. I'm not entirely sure how they're illegal - they sure don't look it to me, but hey maybe you are Jacek.
2. The number of ads is very limited, explanation here - http://mowser.com/blog/archives/14.html
3. Kevin Perkins is one of the guys behind sqweezer, arguably a Mowser competitor, and it doesn't look like he enjoys competion :-)
