The Open C SDK plug-in for developers is now available from Forum Nokia. Open C is built on top of Symbian PIPs and together they together they provide a number of standard, familiar C function libraries on the S60 platform. This allows the reuse existing code from other platforms speeding up development time and cost.
The plug-in is for the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 SDK.
The provision of PIPs and Open C is one of the most significant developments for Symbian developers in recent years. It promises to ease the porting of applications and make development more accessible to existing non-Symbian developers. We will be covering Open C is more detail in due course.
From the Forum Nokia Wiki:
Open C is a major extension to the Symbian development environment. It is a set of standard POSIX and middleware C libraries for the S60 platform that increases developer productivity by enabling the reuse of existing software assets. Open C will be part of the S60 3rd Edition, FP2 release in 2007, and will be available as a plug-in that developers can use to create applications for earlier S60 3rd Edition devices.
Forum Nokia have produce two introductory videos / e-seminars: Open C Introduction for New S60 developers and Open C Introduction for Experienced S60 developers.
There also a discussion group dedicated to Open C here.
