Nokia expanding onto the Desktop PC?

Nokia's Maemo user interface (which runs on the Linux operating system) was designed for their pocket-sized internet tablets, the Nokia 770 and N800. However, the latest version of the UI for upcoming tablets "will be also runnable on desktop Linux", according to one of Nokia's Maemo team. You can see some photos of Maemo in action on an apparently standard Linux PC here and here. This is how it looks on the N800.

Such a move would seem to be impossible for S60 as Symbian isn't available for the PC, and in any case it would be peculiar to want S60 in its current form on a desktop device as S60 is clearly designed for smaller screens.

But the availability of a portable UI like Maemo on desktop PCs brings up some very interesting questions: Could portable and desktop computing gradually merge into one compatible standard? Can a single UI cope with PC needs as well as portable device ones?

There's also the possibility that this is largely a move to encourage Maemo support among Linux developers who don't own a Nokia internet tablet, and to allow Nokia greater leeway with the resolutions and hardware of future internet tablets.
