The tips on using the preset 'Landscape' mode (so that there's no focussing confusion) and using 'Vivid' are good ones, plus I'd suggest playing with 'Exposure' too, as increasing or decreasing this by a couple of 'stops' can make a huge difference when you're capturing something under unusual lighting conditions.
