Ovi Chat news, El Reg pores over the X7, and 10 magical facts about NFC

A clutch of Wednesday links of interest for your delectation. Firstly, Jenny from the Ovi Blog has put up a nice feature (part quoted below) explaining the demise of the chat function in Ovi Contacts and the switch to Ovi Chat. Secondly, there's a well balanced multi-part review of the Nokia X7 by David Phelan over at The Register. And thirdly, the Nseries blog has put up an interesting list of 10 magical things about NFC (Near Field Communications). Right, now back to our Nokia E6 review.....

With the release of these new Chat applications, availability of Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!, and last year’s decision to stop future development on the instant messaging feature of Ovi Contacts, we will be discontinuing the instant messaging feature of Ovi Contacts on August 1, 2011.  If you are a Contacts user, you must begin using the Chat application to continue sending and receiving instant messages from your Ovi friends after this date.  You can go to http://nokia.mobi/chatupdate from your phone to find step-by-step instructions on how to start using Chat to access your Ovi community.

There’s no denying it, Nokia is a class act, capable of delivering some of the best-looking handsets around. This metal-cased phone is well-designed and has great build quality. There are lots of features, all handled well and Nokia’s ability to make a smartphone run for a decent length of time should not be underestimated. In many ways, this is a simply terrific phone, if a bit on the large side.

But it’s powered by Symbian and although this is the best version of the operating system yet, and the version which should have been on the N8, it feels creaky. In the autumn, when Nokia releases its first Windows Phone handset, expect the world to change.
