6 Symbian phones in NTT DOCMO's summer 2011 lineup

Japan's NTT DOCOMO has announced it summer 2011 collection of mobile devices. Out of twenty-four devices six are based on Symbian^2. They includes devices in the STYLE series (SH-11C and F-10C), PRIME Series (SH-10C and F-09C) and SMART series (F-11C). Also announced is the Fujitsu Loox F-07C, which dual boots Symbian (phone mode) and Microsoft Windows 7 (PC mode).

NTT DOCOMO's Symbian based phones do not fit into the traditional smartphone definition. They do not have the same open platform allowing users to add native third party applications. In Europe they might be classified as features phones, but that does not do the devices justice. They are very sophisticated, with high-level specifications and ship with a wide variety of services.

For example most of NTT DOCOMO's devices ship with mapping and navigation services, digital terrestrial TV services, email and other messaging services, an i-appli service for Java based applications, mobile wallet services (Osaifu-Keitai), security services (Omakase Lock) and more. In general they are more advanced than handsets available elsewhere.

Fujitsu Loox F-07C - dual boot phone

The F-07C is effectively two devices in one. It has a standard Symbian Mobile Orientated Application Platform (MOAP) phone functionality, but is also capable of booting Windows 7 Home Edition. The Windows 7 side of the device runs on an Intel Atom processor, has 1GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, ships with Microsoft Office, has WiFi connectivity and a battery life of two hours. There is an optional cradle for the device that gives access to HDMI and USB ports, allowing the device to be used with an external screen and keyboard.
