Top eight N8 video capture tips

Published by at

Although in theory linked to Nokia's 'Shorts' competition, N8 owners may be interested in Ari Partinen's nice blog post, "8 expert movie making tips for your Nokia N8", which echoes many of the things I've been saying over the last year and, bar a few small typos, is a nice bookmarkable piece that should improve anyone's N8 video capture.

From the piece:

Spot Metering

In video mode the Nokia N8 uses spot metering for AE and the spot size is pretty small (located in the centre of the view finder). Avoid placing any bright lights to the corners of the video frame. They will easily burn out because AE is adjusted according to the centre of the image.

If stands or steady cams are used, disable the hand shake reduction. If hand shake reduction is enabled when filming using stands or steady cams it can cause wave like distortion to the footage, so be aware.

Digital Shutter

The Nokia N8 uses a digital shutter in video mode, so avoid fast panning when filming. Vertical lines will appear bent because of the rolling shutter used in digital shutters. What’s great to know is that in still camera mode there’s a mechanical shutter on the Nokia N8, and this is really rare in mobile cameras.
