The SEE 2010 keynotes

Published by at

Buoyed up by the recent SYMBEOSE funding, there will be a distinct air of optimism at SEE 2010, Symbian's annual two day show, this year in Amsterdam. Rafe will be there on the show floor and reporting on any announcements on the 9th and 10th November. The keynotes look like being more important than ever in the current economic and technological climate - I've already quoted the full list of speakers, moderators and panellists, but listed below are the main keynote speakers - expect to see Rafe and his trusty laptop near the front on the day!

Day 1: Tuesday 9th November

10:00 – 10:15

Tim Holbrow, Executive Director, Symbian Foundation

You may not have heard of Tim before, but he was a co-founder of the Symbian Foundation, leading its operational launch during 2008 and early 2009 and a key figure behind the business aspects of Symbian for the previous eight years. Expect to hear more on SYMBEOSE and statements of support and intent for the current Symbian ecosystem, including the strong portfolio of Nokia in particular.

10:15 – 11:00

Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President, Symbian Devices, Nokia

Don't expect any new device announcements, but there will be reports of Nokia's Symbian success stories of the last few years, plus early numbers from the new Symbian(^3) range. Hopefully we'll get a feel for Nokia's intended plans for form factors and platform going into 2011 and 2012. I suspect MeeGo may get a few (complementary) name checks too.

11:00 – 11:30

Mike Kuniavsky

Offering what should be a thought-provoking talk to round up day one's keynotes, Mike is a designer, researcher and entrepreneur, and the writer of the 2010 book, “Smart Things: ubiquitous computing user experience design”, a guide to the user-centred design of digital consumer electronics, appliances, and environments.

Day 2: Wednesday 10th November

10:30 – 11:00

Jouni Ylitalo, Open OS Strategy Manager, ST-Ericsson

Jouni is the Open OS Strategy Manager for ST-Ericsson‘s Software Ecosystem and Strategy team and has been involved with the Symbian Foundation since its inception, including acting as the primary representative for Symbian’s Architecture Council, and he has also recently become involved in the Features and Roadmap Council. Note that ST-Ericsson is, confusingly, not the same as Sony Ericsson, and is mainly concerned with staying behind the scenes, using smartphone technology to help others build phones, plus working on its own enterprise and embedded devices.

11:00 – 11:30

David Sallis, Programme Director, Symbian Foundation

David is Programme Director and was responsible for SYMBEOSE: the successful €22M EC-funded bid, led by the Symbian Foundation in a 24-organisation consortium. Expect to hear more details of the plans for SYMBEOSE.

11:30 – 12:00

Aidan Quilligan, Managing Director, Accenture Embedded Software Services

In October 2009, Aidan led the acquisition of the Symbian Professional Services unit from Nokia, accelerating Accenture‘s existing embedded software, product-development and testing skills. Expect to hear more of Accenture's role in the Symbian ecosystem, plus look out for David Wood in the wings, one of the architects of Symbian OS itself and who now works for Accenture.

More as it happens from SEE 2010 (it's free to attend) next week!
