Ringing in the changes for OLED with some new themes?

Published by at

We don't often mention themes on AAS, but when we do we try to make them good ones. With the new generation of OLED (CBD) displays now imminent from Nokia, I thought I'd highlight a few themes designed to make the most of the vivid OLED colours without taking the overall brightness too far into excessive battery-draining territory. It goes without saying that they'll also work on the Samsung i8910 - and probably every other S60 5th Edition (and possibly 3rd Edition) smartphone too. Comments welcome - which is your favourite theme for OLED?

You'll remember from a month or two back that we highlighted a great little piece of research from Forum Nokia into the power drain for different screen type with different displayed content? The upshot of it was that the whiter your OLED screen, the more power it soaked up (naturally), to the tune of using twice as much power as traditional TFT screens for an all-white display. On the other hand, keep your theme/screen/interface as dark as possible and you can see power savings of five to ten times, potentially.

And so onto a selection of OLED-aimed themes which I think might fit the bill for some of you. I've left the original artist adverts and URLs in - they deserve the publicity for producing such great themes for the Symbian world!

Disclaimer and notes:

  1. Not all themes linked to from this page have been fully tested. They're from known authors, but be aware that some themes may cause minor unwanted cosmetic side effects - if this happens, just change your theme to something else and uninstall it.
  2. Note that some themes include both 'default' and normal SIS files. The 'default' bit refers to using the default S60 icons, should you prefer these. A default theme should let your device run faster - in theory.
  3. We suggest installing Symbian themes to your 'C' disk - the other disks will get locked out when you hook your phone up to a PC or Mac and so a theme installed onto card will become unavailable, with unpredictable results.
