Charge your Nokia N8 with a hamster

Published by at

Nokia's marketing campaign for the upcoming Nokia N8 is starting to kick off. Released today is a (potentially) viral video showcasing a prototype hamster-powered charging accessory for the N8. The charger in question was the result of Peter Ash's GCSE coursework. Originally it was powered by Elvis the hamster, but we suspect, five years on from the original construction, that Elvis might have left the building. So it's Elvis mark 2 in the hot wheel.

There's a somewhat serious side to this too (and we're not talking about the Hamster Liberation Front), in that the video ties in with Nokia's ‘It's not technology, it's what you do with it’ tag line, which is likely to be an underlying theme in a number of Nokia's forthcoming marketing activities.

Hamster phone charger

Meet Peter Ash. Back in 2005 his sister had a hamster called Elvis. He was quite an energetic little chap. In fact, Peter's sister used to complain that Elvis kept her awake at night because he wouldn't stop playing in his wheel. That got Peter thinking about ways to put Elvis' energy to good use. So, with a few gears and a turbine, he built a hamster-powered phone charger. And the more Elvis happily played on his wheel, the more talk time Peter got on his Nokia. Good work Elvis.
