More news, on more mobile devices, than ever before

Some interesting numbers over at the Online Journalism Blog on mobile web uptake in the UK. Looking through the internet section of the latest Ofcom report, they’ve found the significance of mobile access, with 23% of the UK population using a mobile browser to access the web.

There is still some way to go, as 27% of the population still can’t access the web on any device, but with close to 1 in 4 people using mobile devices it’s now even more important for web developers to consider the smaller screen. Not just the larger screens of the top end devices, but the smaller resolution screens at the low end.

We should be thinking about mobile as another medium, with different generic qualities to print, broadcast or web, and different consumption and distribution patterns.

I also like the fact that 48% of 24-34 year olds are using online sources to keep up to date with the news. It’s certainly a time of change, and while some things are as expected, the public are still happy to throw away some rules of thumb that have been used to build up Web 2.0 sites... the amount of user generated content being posted online is dropping, in some cases by up to 10%.
