Beta Labs make available a "release candidate" of Nokia Notifications

Published by Ewan Spence at 14:15 UTC, June 8th 2010

It’s long been an issue with Nokia users that software features on device ‘a’ don't seem to be present on device ‘b’, and one of the areas pointed out by many is the system of notifications in the 3rd Edition Eseries devices. Now a combined “catcher” for alerts to missed calls, voicemails, arriving messages and emails and upcoming calendar appointments has been released by Nokia Beta Labs for the Nokia N97 and N97 mini homescreen.

This release is a bug catching release via the Beta Labs, they’ve acknowledged the app will be getting a “full” release via the Ovi Store in the near future, so while they’d like people to report any and all bugs, only the most critical ones will be addressed before the public release.

I’d assume the smaller bugs will be picked up and sorted for a second release.

As this is a homescreen widget, it is only available (so far) for the N97 and N97 mini. More on Nokia Notifications at the Beta Labs application page and the blog post announcing the download details.

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't this what those icons in the top right hand corner of the screen are for? I'd much prefer tiny icons than wasting a homescreen slot.

You make a good and valid point, but the article mentions that it combines all the alerts PLUS upcoming calendar appointments. So if you are one who uses one of the homescreen slots for calendar appointments, this is actually a bonus where apart from calendar entries, a lot more information is getting displayed.

Ewan, mistake in your article.

It does not list upcoming calendar events, but 'missed' ones. I dont see any use for missed calendar events notifications. Wish it was upcoming calendar events.

RollerSMB, your points stands. :)
