Opera look back at a big month in February
Published by Ewan Spence at 9:14 UTC, March 29th 2010
Opera have published their monthly look at the mobile web, which even though it has a focus on the Norwegian browser company, is a nice snapshot of growth, both their own and that of the mobile web. From their 50.5 million users, the top countries for Opera Mini, their java based browser, were Russia, Indonesia, India and China.
My favourite statistic is the compression used to minimise the bandwidth required by Opera Mini. As the data passes through their servers, they have an accurate number for this. The compressed data passed was 330 million MB. If this had been uncompressed, it would have represented 3 petabytes. Would that have counted as fair use?
More from Opera’s state of the Mobile Web can be found online at their site.

interesting what would be the mobile phone data traffic comparison - Opera (uncompressed) vs Iphone?

One day all browsers will work this way, or at least be capable of working this way.

I'm very curious, with all their browsers being free and Opera themselves having to bear the costs for servers compressing the data (as in Opera mini);
How do they make their money ?

Network traffic generated as a result of use of Opera generates revenue for the network providers, and in turn they pay a bit to Opera Software. Additionally Opera earn a bit by having Google as the default search, generating money through google.
They used to be add funded + freemium but have changed their model.

The lack of bandwidth available to mobile users in those countries is probably the only reason why OMini is so popular out there. In western Europe and most parts of the US, most people I know use Opera Mobile or another full fledged browser. Using Opera Mini in the US is like buying a Ferrari and then trundling along at 10 on an interstate with zero traffic.
