The Mystery of 108 and the Symbian Countdown
Published by Ewan Spence at 15:53 UTC, January 27th 2010
Did you see the single numebr tweeted by Symbian yesterday? Prefixed by the tag #symbiancountdown, the number 108 was released to the world. With no explanation. So we've put our thinking caps on, wondering what this Symbian Countdown could be. Is your favourite theory in here?
Countdown has its own page on the Symbian site (http://countdown.symbian.org/), so it's fair to say that this is something major. The Symbian Foundation now has a rolling cycle of product releases, so unless they're ready to jump the gun, it's not going to be code additions. The plan for many a year has always been slow and steady, with not too many surprises.

Knowing that, perhaps the significance isn't a countdown as such. By putting that reference at the start they could be putting in just a touch of distraction towards a time and away from the number? So how significant is 108? Could it be a number of new partners? That would have some literary significance as Homer, during his Odyssey, had 108 suitors coveting his wife. Who's coveting Symbian and their market at the moment?

It's so obvious the people at Symbian are secretly Suikoden fans, and this is their way of showing it. :)
As for the 61 err.... they're fans of no. 61 from Suikoden II?
It could be that 108:61 is around the same as 16:9, grasping at straws, but then again we all are. :P

This is simple guys.
108 firmware updates before the latest phone is usable.

I think it counts the remaining open bugs of something..

@kevwright. Or the amount of multi tasked apps Symbian phones may be capable of running at the same time!
(get that one in quick before 6pm....;-)
Edit: after the Cupertino 'event' i guess we still don't have to be concerned with Multi-Tasking on an Apple handheld device....

Maybe number of packages left until full open sourcing?

108 is the amount of RAM that their next flagship phone will have! they thought ahhh why keep giving them 128MB of RAM? take away 20MB of that RAM for speed...

If they wanted to generate hype for an upcoming product, they couldn't have picked a worse moment. All eyes are on Apple; today, and for the next few days.

I don't care about apple, they just launched a big stretched iPhone with some improvements in hardware specs. I didn't see any innovation like everyone else on the Internet sad before the launch.
But symbian can release a very good news very soon.
:D

It could be 108 days before the next Symbian is Released as it is a countdown

I do remember a Nokia press release that a Symbian device with ^2 features will be released midway 2010 (in their own words "Re-engineer our Symbian user interface; deliver a major product milestone before mid-year 2010"). 108 days is almost 4 months. Could be a countdown to that - announcement of release of the 1st official ^2 device.

It says 61 now. The time being 11.39 pm, Central Time (US & Canada)
