The S60 YouTube client gets various updates - via Ovi Store only
Published by Steve Litchfield at 22:03 GMT, December 23rd 2009
In a remarkable turn of events, Nokia's Ovi Store (e.g. see the client on your phone) has beaten another official outlet to the punch, with new versions of the free S60 YouTube client available - v2.2.21 for S60 3rd Edition phones and v2.2.29 for S60 5th Edition phones. No major feature changes, I'm afraid, and the menu is somewhat screwy on the latter version, but hey, it's free and it's new, right? Photo proof below.

The app prompted me to download a newer version and then said it wasn't compatible with my device (n95), how's that for a twist ;)

really good work! thanx a lot for that!
but it would be very nice if it could be possible to change the quality of the vids to a higher level!

why they heck doesn't Nokia open the Ovi store to non-Nokia S60 phones? even worse, why can't you download the install files to your pc when the app is free?

Quite agree. This means that if the Ovi client doesn't work on your handset (which is the case for me) then you can't install any apps. Utter idiocy.

What about the mobile web version of the Ovi Store? That will serve up exactly the same file!

Nope, it says the phone is not supported and you can't install the client on other phones either - once you work out how to download it that is ;)

Ah well, you're not missing much. No doubt a more official upgrade will appear on the m.google.com site....

bit harsh. To be honest, it's a fair question, and there are benefits to allowing omnia/satio etc access to the store, namely, a higher client base. The Ovi store isn't exactly a selling point (yet), but with the help of third party phones, and some other fixes, it just may get there. Obviously tho, Nokia may have done their homework, and figured third party phone access wouldn't get them there *much* faster, and may believe that if/when Ovi does become a selling point, they want it on their phones alone. But currently.. I honestly think they should offer it on all Symbian phones, or even donate it to the Symbian foundation, with the hope of a unified store ecosystem, to help promote the Symbian brand. just my 2c (and no, I'm not a retard, because I said so, and that's how these things are decided, right? :) )

More than a 'bit harsh' - it's unnecessarily offensive.
Besides, as the others have pointed out, it makes perfect business sense to open up the Ovi store to non-Nokia phones.
