SEE 2009: NAVTEQ

Published by at

NAVTEQ would literally like to take you for a ride at SEE. Along with the usual activities, NAVTEQ Network for Developers (NN4D) will be giving developers the opportunity to gain an insight into how NAVTEQ gathers mapping and location information.

Running from outside the Earls Court 2 entrance on the first day of the show, between 10:30am until 4:30pm, will be one of NAVTEQ’s multi-cam map data collection vehicles. The rides will provide developers with the opportunity to go behind the scenes to gain an understanding of how professional-grade maps are built, learn more about NN4D, and the company’s mapping APIs and LocationPoint Advertising API. If you are interested in securing a demo ride in the mapping car send an email to RideandDrive@navteq.com.

NN4D will be offering more (literally) pedestrian fodder inside Earls Court 2.

With GPS capabilities becoming de facto on mobile devices, NAVTEQ believes LBS have the ability to bridge the virtual and physical worlds. In doing so, these services have the potential to significantly extend the use of the mobile phone.

This is the theme of Symbian and Location: Trends and Technology a presentation by Michael Moore, Technical Consultant from NN4D in the Application Development seminar track. During his talk, Michael plans to provide developers with an insight into trends in the location based application industry and how developers can include location technology in their applications. The presentation will cover:

  • An overview of positioning technologies and handset trends and their impact on the future of LBS, including:
    • higher accuracy in positioning.
    • the importance of high-quality map data and location content.
    • a wide range of handset technologies, from browsers, sensors/ accelerometers, cameras and OCR (optical character recognition) technology to haptics and their usefulness for LBS applications.
  • How location and context awareness enables a new era of mobile applications, for example multi-modal navigation, location-based entertainment, social networking, and location-based advertising.
  • How to get started using NAVTEQ map data and location content.
  • Overview of some available APIs and technical resources.

Michael’s presentation takes place at 2:30pm on the first day of the show (Tuesday, 27 October 27).

In addition to sponsoring the show, NN4D is sponsoring BlogTalkRadio a new feature for this year’s show. BlogTalkRadio will take SEE to the virtual airwaves and give those unable to attend a flavour of the exhibition and conference experience with “on air” interviews as well as show news. The BlogTalkRadio will be embedded in the homepage of the SEE event website and broadcast live interviews with key influencers in the industry (which of course will include NAVTEQ) as well as developers from the show’s developer pavilion.

Undoubtedly NN4D will also be reminding developers about the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge. This is an annual world-wide competition conducted by NN4D, challenging application developers to build innovative location-aware applications using dynamic positioning technology and NAVTEQ maps. By entering, developers have the chance to win a share of a prize pool currently worth $8.2 million (USD) in cash, licenses, services, and handsets. There are five regions, each open to application submissions for any platform and any device. Registration for EMEA has just been extended to 6 November, which should give developers time to register at www.LBSChallenge.com after the show.
