The Nokia 5800 gets v31.0.008

Published by Steve Litchfield at 13:09 UTC, September 14th 2009

The Nokia 5800 just got a firmware update via both Nokia Software Update (100MB or so) and over the air (6MB), to v31.0.008, for many worldwide product codes today. Changes are listed below, but do please comment if you notice something extra that's new or shiny! The usual caveats over backups apply, though the 5800 has User Data Preservation, so don't worry too much about your data.

To update over the air, type *#0000# from the dialler and 'Check for updates'. Good luck!

What I've noticed in v31.0.008:

  • updates Nokia Maps to Ovi Maps 3.1

  • updated Ovi Store client to v1.05(231)

  • 'performance improvements' (more RAM, optimisations)

To update this story: v31 available blah blah .... unless you have the generic UK model that hasn't even got v30 available for it yet!

Nokia UK officially sucks.

Not available for RM-428 NAM yet.

if anyone thinks that we have to wait too long for firmware updates to become available globally then head over to the Firmware equality petition & show your support

Just upgraded from 30.XX (I changed the product code of my French SFR branded 5800 to Euro 2 generic)... I did the upgrade directly from the phone (*#0000# and then select upgrade). Didn't do a backup before. Upgraded in a few minutes. Everything working and at its place after the update. I love the new data preservation features. :)

Updated, as I already had said apps updated I didn't notice anything cool. But hey, performance upgrades are always good no?

Anyone hard resetted their phones after it?
ggravier
OK... I *DID* see a change. I have NEVER seen my phone get a GPS fix so fast... and that from INSIDE my house. I love this new update. :)

I feel it fastest than before, but my Contacts Bar still doesn't works, just like before! When could I fix it. It's annoy me.

Note that even though the new update commes with a new Ovi Maps 3.01(22)... if ouy use the Nokia Maps Updater right after, it updates THAT Ovi Maps to 3.01(23)... :) So up to date... but just not 100% . :) Still goodness!

Do a hard reset. It will solve your problem.

LOL! Upgrade and then flick the scroll bar on a long list! LOL!

I just did this... flicked the scroll bar on my bookmarks... it scrolled... perfectly. What happens on yours? How long is your list?

Upgraded Euro 1, doesnt seem to be much new. Disappointed to Kinetic scrolling or wigitised HS like N97 or newer HS like 5530.

More RAM is useful though :)

Shame O2 still seem to be holding onto the original firmware. I know it takes time to check the compatability but Operator branded phones are such a pain.

I know about hard reset, but I have a lot of apps installed and I don't want to have to find it and install it again, because, if I restore the apps backs, the problem returns too. Anyway, Thanks for your Attention.

Ovi Maps is updated to 3.01 and, what's most important, it finally works in landscape mode! Which also means that I can finally use the big landscape qwerty to input addresses.
Too late for me, since in the meanwhile I got the i8910 that has a more sensitive GPS chip and a digital compass, but it should make many 5800 users happy.

The wife's is still resolutely stuck at v21. She bought it direct from Nokia. Bloody infuriating.

Change the code and upgrade, it's very easy. Same goes for o2 customers.

Those who were expecting kinetic scrolling, forget it. You bought a cheap phone so don't expect premium features.

Yeah, yeah... I did that with my N95, but I shouldn't HAVE to, and Joe Public doesn't know HOW to.

So are you saying that there IS now for the first time kinetic scrolling in parts of the browser at least?

AAS is always very good about pointing out that new firmware is out - the trouble is, it's never available for UK unbranded phones. Any chance of one of the AAS crew finding out why and doing a story on it? Nokia seems pretty unconcerned with its poor firmware update service to UK customers - maybe they'd notice an AAS feature and actually do something about the update (or lack of update) situation?

AAS wouldnt want to upset Nokia now would they?
Unregistered
If AAS want to get to the forefront of Non Biased reporting... They need to stop being Bum Ferrets to Nokia, And get real with it. The UK is being badly mistreated in respect of Firmware Updates and it needs addressing ASAP! OH and please note the Smiley:-) Humour Guys!
