The Nokia N97 firmware v11 goes live

Published by Steve Litchfield at 8:22 UTC, July 1st 2009

For many people anyway, e.g. here at N97 enthusiast Gerry Moth's. See also his Twitter feed for his comments through the day. Rafe and Tzer2 both have N97s here at AAS and I'll try to get some comments out of them through the day!

Patience is a virtue.
It's not here on my german white one, either, but I am sure it will come available over the course of today.

Sooo, launch the N97 globally and then fail to deliver firmware for all SIM free versions at the same time.

Sorry, it's another... FAIL!

if nokia released it for all variants at same time then the servers crashed with the amount of ppl trying to get the update you would say fail to that too
recently no matter what nokia do there is people waiting to knock them for no reason.
i'm just happy there is update available less than a month after release even though i cant get the update in UK yet

I got it on my UK sim free, but had to do a PC update

Uk Sim free handsets always get firmwares later than euro versions. Any where from 5 - 30 days usually, still sucks though.

Nokia can't release an OTA firmware update simultaneously to all live handsets because the NETWORKS WON'T ALLOW it. It has to be done by quota and staggered to reduce the concurrent downloads happening all at the same time.

Celios is a FAIL for not stopping and thinking before posting. Nokia have to contend with fools like this posting crap on forums.

There can't be too many people on UK mobile networks who don't have either a UK SIM free phone, or a UK operator branded version of the N97.

If they were worried about overloading their servers (something you can plan for) It would make some kind of sense if they rolled it out to groups of IMEI numbers rather than country by country. When the UK SIM free version is available, there will be a sudden surge of demand, not that many people will be downloading the firmware OTA via a mobile phone network, I would imagine most people will have the sense to do it via WiFi or the PC suite connection.

Nokia are slowing irritating more and more of their customers, the firmware on my phone is dated mid-May. WTF have they been doing for 6 weeks that they couldn't find time to test the firmware for all the product codes they have already shipped? This wouldn't be a problem if there weren't obvious bugs that you spot within a day of using the phone.

You think upgrading the firmware is joke??? You try to do few lines of code in 6 weeks and see how far you go, stop ranting and wait for upgrade just like everyone else, no body forced you to buy n97, there are lots of other option.

Come on ladies, calm down!

It has got bugger all to do with OTA updates and server load.

a UK Sim Free variant is just that a customised version of the N97 for the UK market, as such any new firmware has to be customised, tested and approved before release.
In that respect it is no different to a branded handset.

UK Sim Free variants, rarely, if ever get released on the same day as the standard euro variant, it usually takes 5-30 days before they are tested and released.

This is utter rubbish. The number of people who do OTA Nokia firmware upgrades is in the low hundreds - in each territory.

More disinformation from anonymous Nokia fanboys. They are as bad as the Apple loonies, now.

I got it over the air at 9 'o' clock this morning. SIM free N97 on T-Mobile. Works a charm. It didn't have any effect on the oh so disappointing keyboard though.

The space bar on the right is not a problem, I like it there. Here are my two main issues. 1: Why oh why isn't there a dedicated comma key, or at least have the full stop key as the comma key and have two spaces as a full stop? I like to put punctuation in my sentences.!£$"%&??? 2: The keys are horrible to type on, they don't enough of a click to them and with some of the letters I will be unsure whether I have pressed the key down or not.

This seems badly thought out when one of the main selling points of this device is the slider and by extension the physical keyboard.

Anyone know if the change list has been published? Seen a couple floating around, after something official from Nokia

Hi there,

I just playing around with N97 (S60 V5)....its built in messanging is very good to me.
1. It can pull every 5 minutes
2. It will be grouping the email message by the date...so I can collapse 2 days ago or yesterday emails...and only expand today emails.

Also I've tried nokia push messaging software in E71....but I don't like it at all.
Because, I can not see the message details (to check how many KB it is) and also can not mark the emails with shift + d pad....so it is so painful to choose several emails and delete the emails one by one...
Also there is no time info on each today's email.

My question is :
Does N97 built in messaging the same as in N86 (S60V3 FP2), E 75 (S60V3 FP2) and 5800 (S60 V5) ?

The built in email messaging in E71 is good but not as good & complete as N97...

Thanks

Nokia should've got these bugs ironed out of the phone prior to release, given the £500 price tag! Then to top it off, users that paid this sum (like me) do not get the firmware update right away - WTF?!?! People like me are right to be annoyed! We buy an unfinished product and then get asked to join the back of the queue to get it sorted! Nokia, you're lucky people some people are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

i'm downloading update as i type; going smoothly but will report after i'm finished
