Last week we covered the news of the next generation of the S60 WRT (widgets with contextual awareness). Voice of S60 is now carrying a podcast with Ganesh Sivaraman, head of global marketing of Web Technologies and Applications for S60, which discusses this topic, and there's also some updated information of the S60.com web site, including demos of various widgets.
Many of you are users of ShoZu on your mobile device - I certainly am. So it's with delight that Ewan MacLeod (SMSTextNews) points out they now have a desktop client. As with the mobile client, ShoZu Desktop is multi-platform (using Adobe Air on PC, Mac and Linux) and lets you upload your media to the popular sharing sites, email to friends, or post them onto your blog.
It's the week's best (generic) mobile reading, as always, and hey, it's hosted at my 3-Lib site this time around. Feel free to pop over to Carnival of the Mobilists no. 121 for your Monday morning reading!
I'm really not at all sure of exactly when this went live, but Internet Radio support for the Nokia E65 and E51 wasn't there a month or so ago and, well, now it is. Making my wife and a lot of other E65 and E51 users very happy indeed. Here's the Nokia Internet Radio download page - highly recommended. Comments welcome if you've got this working on non-listed compatible devices!
Pat Phelan's suggestions on reducing your telecoms bill are all worth a read, even if you're not a penny pinching Scotsman. Naturally he does mention his MaxRoam SIM card, but this is a much more over-arching look at your entire budget - from Skype and Rebtel to specific mobile plans and roaming options, there's probably something here for everyone.
Yep, Ben from IntoMobile has spotted this Motorola competition for (very) amateur film makers. Interestingly, the second 'round' of the final (the bit to actually win the £10k) has to be shot on the Z10 itself. Very cool on all fronts.
The Mobitubia blog has announced and released the last public (as in free to the public) version of the popular YouTube access utility and Flash video player. v1.80 build 4 has a huge change list, central to which is smoother video playback. Great application. More details below.
Opening at 1800 GMT (so 7pm UK Summer time, 11am US West Coast) is the first official System Rush tournament. Organised by the N-Gage Arena Team, there are Arena Points (NGP) on offer. Register online in the first 15 mintues, and make sure to bring up the chat room at the top of the N-Gage forums as you race each other. Good luck!
It seems that Motorola just announced a tweak to the venerable UIQ 3-powered Z8 'kick-slide' smartphone. At an event in Korea, the Z8m was unveiled, although details are still sketchy. It seems that there might be 4GB of built-in flash memory, in addition to an expansion slot. Can anyone fill in more detail on this story?
Sony Ericsson's Q1 results show an increase in overall device shipments of 2% from last year, but the good news end there with the average selling price dropping from 134 EUR to 121 EUR and profits dropping 42% to 181 million EUR. Sony Ericsson cite higher research and development costs (as a % of sales) along with slower sales growth of high end handsets.
The Nokia Music Store is now available in France, with a pricing of 1 euro per song, 10 euros per album, or 10 euros a month to listen to all the store's tracks through a PC. As with the other Nokia Music Stores, tracks can be bought onto a PC and sideloaded onto a phone, or bought and downloaded directly onto certain phone models.
Over on our sister site All About N-Gage, Ewan has reviewed FIFA 08, pronouncing it great for both novices and footie fanatics, praising the crisp graphics and training touches in particular. The only downside was thought to be the lack of multi-player options. (Tzer2 adds: Most of Europe can still get FIFA08 for N-Gage absolutely free from Nokia's N-Gage Play website.)
Fellow mobile writers Matthew Stevens and Darla Mack have drawn our attention to Gypsii,
another entrant in the albeit crowded marketplace for social networks
powered by the mobile phone. Gypsii is primarily built around photo
sharing and tagging each photo with the GPS derived location data, then
sharing this with your friends on the Gypsii network.
Well done to Krisse for being post of the week in Carnival of the Mobilists 120. Some good background reading here and I'd better pay attention this week since 3-Lib is the next host(!)
