AAS Podcast #45: Johan Sandberg, UIQ

Published by at

It's been a big year for UIQ. At the start of the year they were owned by Symbian, now they're co-owned by Sony Ericsson and (announced at the start of October) Motorola. Time to catch up with the CEO to find out what's going on.

Show Notes

Johan Sandberg has been a busy man in the last few weeks, with announcements from UIQ and a number of new devices from partners for the Chistmas season making an impact. I managed to catch up with him at the recent CTIA Wireless and Entertainment Show in San Francisco to find out what's going on in the world of UIQ.

We touch on a number of issues in this interview from CTIA in San Francisco, starting with the impact of the ownership by Sony Ericsson and then Motorola coming along and taking a 50% stake. What sort of practices do UIQ have in place to treat their owners and other licencees fairly? And have they learned anything from observing Nokia’s push to make S60 a platform over a number of handset manufacturers?

And of course UIQ isn’t developed in a vacuum, there’s a huge history to the product that has influenced UIQ3, and competing devices are constantly introduced to the market, including the Apple iPhone. Can hype ever rival technology?
