Still regarded by some (including me) as the best smartphone for heavy email/office users, the Nokia E90 has received a major-versioned update to v400 firmware. Because the phone gets wiped as part of the upgrade process (no UDP here), it's difficult to measure the improvement in overall performance, so comments from users welcomed. Some screens below...
Read on in the full article.
If you update via NSU, does it give a list of whats new in the firmware updated (as was reported by you a while ago)?
You would have to be a raving lunatic to upgrade without a route back to a known good version.
Does it include the E71 improvement in homescreen (2 mailboxes, quicksearch)?
No, this doesn't seem to add any improvements made on more recent devices 8-(
And sorry, I forgot to capture/note the initial update screen on NSU - I was in too much of a hurry! Anyone care to try theirs and see what's shown?
Here is the updates included in F/W 400.34.93 as listed by NSU application:
- Improved call stability
- Improved Browser, Maps, WiFi and VoIP
Will launch update now - hope I have a phone to work within an hour... ;^)
hmmm... seems they only updated the things that were already good...
I was hoping they would improve the things that needs improvement
So far, a totally unconvincing update procedure. NSU lost the connection to my phone twice, when XP tries to install the "BB5 ADL Loader", it fails, now I'm not really sure what's going on...
Tried it a 2nd time, same problem, so I'm giving up.
In my opinion, no FW update should leave you in some sort of limbo "has it worked?", "what the **** is going on?", "should I unplug it now?" state, especially if there is the faintest chance of bricking a 500 device. Trying this update was buttock-clenchingly awful.
Nokia, I can not believe how ubelievably cr*p your update mechanism is, you must be able to do better than this!! Actually, I have a good idea: take a look at how easy Apple manage to make updating iPod/iPhone FW. That's exactly how it should be done.

Worked like a charm! - Kind of...
The update procedure will look like it crashed in early stages with phone shut down, and a horrible error message stating loss of USB connection. One is adviced to remove charger, USB cable and battery, and then replace *first* USB cable, then battery and finally charger.
Then start up the phone again and click "Retry" on the NSU application. After a moment (enter PIN on your phone if/when requested) the update will proceed and finish successfully.
After restoring all my setings from a up-to-date backup (you made that - didn't you!!?) everything seems to work fine.
If you wish to use the Maps 3 Beta, you'll have to delete the "Cities" folder and "Qf" file from your memory card, launch Maps version 2 once, and then reinstall Maps 3.00 Beta.
Easy as pie - kind of...
As far as updates, we all know about the Flash update (YouTube works, will Pandora radio?) and Maps being still (old-but-updated) version 2. Other updates may be more "in the curtains"...
It works: Go for it 😊
Updated mine last night and reinstalled all my apps. Phone does feel snappier, especially in the browser.
Is it still hackable via helloOX and rompatcher?
Well, after about 6 attempts, I've given up. No matter what I try, the updater keeps losing contact with my E90. I saw on the Nokia forum that someone had the same problem with an E51 update, so it looks like Nokia's updater is a seriously flawed piece of software...
Anyway, I've sent an email to Nokia Nederland about this problem; it'll be interesting to see if there is a solution...
I wonder why they change the numbers so much (all the way up to 400) which would suggest a MAJOR update when this really seems to be a minor update?
i have no idea why people are having difficulty in updating their E90.
after about 3 or 4 months of not using my E90, due to using my Android Dev Phone 1 constantly, i installed the very latest version of Nokia PC Suite, and downloaded the very latest version of the Nokia Software Updater.
worked like a charm, no issues no problems whatsoever.
i must say that i am disappointed that the E90 seems to be continually stuck in a feature-less state when compared to other E-series phones, part of the reason why i switched over to Android in the first place.
anyway, i would advise anyone who wants to update their firmware to ALWAYS make sure you have the very latest version of the Nokia PC Suite and the latest version of the Nokia Software Updater
I have the latest versions of both, but the update just will not work. I am not doing anything strange, just following the instructions as they appear, but no joy.
Has anyone seen a new Blackberry Connect application to go with this new firmware version?
They usually go hand-in-hand.
I can't update until I see that I can use my Blackberry mail as well...

Nothing there yet....

well i had a same problem with my nikia 6220.... I had to do it with some guy who i paid😞(
There is no problem with the NSU!!!
It's normal, when your phone restarts itself during the update and of course when the phone is restarting, the connection is lost!!! Like when you restart your computer, then it can't communicate with other devices. Besides this the NSU informs you, that this kind of errorrs are normal.
I have a slower machine and I've realized, that during the update a new driver is installed and sometimes this install can be longer than NSU expects and throws an error message: "connection lost...". No problem, just wait until the driver install finishes and hit the retry button.
Cheers
The good:
Upgraded to 400.34.93 without problems, reinstalled all applications and restored calendar, contacts etc from backup also without problems.
2 days in and the phone is definitely more stable. not a single Kern error whereas before Profimail would bomb out at least twice a day.
Overall the phone seems marginally faster. But this could be due to a clean install.
Not so good:
Speed dial no longer works! Press and hold a key and nothing happens except the number appears on the screen. To dail the speed dial now takes two presses - number and send.
Annoyingly, Web Launch (0) and Voicemail (1) still work correctly it's only the personal speed dials which don't work. Or maybe I've missed something?
I agree that the phone seems faster and more stable.
on speed dial issue, it is working just fine on my phone. It's been 3 days since I upgraded and I haven't encountered any issue nor did I notice any functionalities that are not normal.

"connection lost...". No problem, just wait
Hmm, I'm afraid there is something else. After ten failures or so, I have been waiting for a whole night, without result. Tried different PC USB ports, uninstalled/reinstalled PCsuite and NSU, tried also from different Windows profiles. Other users tell the same story.

Yep. I missed something! I just turned speeddial back on in the phone settings and all is well again. Doh!
i can`t reinstall all the apps I previously purchased.
gives me invalid certificate error.
how can it be?
I have installl all and no certificate check.
i discovered that on heavy internet browsing i have memory full message.
Did this hapend to you as well.
It looks that after cleaning cache the message dissapear and pop up again after more browsing.
Any ideea how to solve this kind of embarasing messages?
Any ideea how can I downgrade?
Or when a new version will be available?
Cheers
