Slot Car Racer

Yes, Slot Car Racer is Scalextric on your phone, but don't get too excited, this is no official title (iPhone game demo link) - we're very much in casual game territory here. However, as with many casual games, good gameplay can make up for lack of flashy graphics - and there's definitely a 'one more go' factor at work here. What do you think? Worth £1? Too basic? I rather like Slot Car Racer myself, as a good example of a 'one button game'...

Here are some screens of Slot Car Racer on Symbian:

Written in Qt, I do get the impression of this being one of the developer's first games, though at least he's actively improving it - I got an update a couple of days ago.

There are two game modes: Arcade sees you trying to keep completing laps in under a guide time - get 5 laps done and you're on to the next track. And the next. And the next, and so on. Time attack mode sees you racing to try and achieve your best time on each of the supplied tracks.

As with the real Scalextric, the idea is to mash down on the power control enough that your car accelerates at the right points, without putting down so much power that the back end of the Scalextric car swings right round and you're off the track - temporarily, which loses you time.

Hey, at least you don't have to crawl across the carpet on your hands and knees,  as when retrieving cars with the real game!

At the top of the screen, a meter shows the approximate speed of the car - it's not that useful, you'll want to feel your way around each circuit by eye, I think....

One of the toughest tracks. Can you avoid flying off?

Apparently not! Try again, though - practise makes perfect.
