Vimeo, the serious alternative to YouTube? - now on Symbian

Published by at

Vimeo has been around since YouTube was created, but has never really had the popular vote, largely because there are few skateboarding cats, pirated music vids or ranting teenagers on it. The focus has always been on slightly more serious content, and it's great to see a native (well, Qt) Vimeo application appear officially. Compatibility seems to be Belle onwards, it seems. Screenshots and links below.

Here's Vimeo in the Nokia Store, go grab it now, it's free. Here's the app in action:

The look is very professional, with a featured video always prominent on all home/category screens, so you're always only one tap away from something interesting. 'Categories' are as expected, but quite exhaustive, plus there are curated 'channels' or related, quality content.

Videos play full-screen in landscape (but won't screenshot, so I'll leave those to your imagination - quality is 360p and good on nHD screens) when needed. A pop-up menu gives access to 'like', which is about as social as Vimeo seems to get, plus the facility to get involved by uploading your own content - don't chortle too much at my enthusiasm for the old N97 mini - this would have been recorded early 2010, I think, despite the '1 year ago' caption here. 8-)

Some of the categories and videos included. Mostly quite high quality content, certainly a leap above the average YouTube upload IMHO.
