[BlueGPS] Free Bluetooth GPS Application for P800/900 Phones

28 replies · 25,568 views · Started 01 June 2004

Hi,

I'm getting ready to release an application to the public that will allow users to connect their P800/900 to a Bluetooth GPS receiver. The application will be free and I'm working to constantly improve it. Right now it's in beta and if you're interested in helping test then please send me an email. I'm looking for P800 beta testers and if you own a P900 I would love to hear how it runs.

The application has been tested on the P800 with a Belkin GPS receiver. If you have a different config then please feel free to beta test and give feedback. I'm looking to build a lot of functionality into this app and there's a long ways to go. Right now the application tells you lat, lon, speed, and direction. Please feel free to download a copy and give me an suggestions/feedback - dennis at db75 dot com.

I will test this once I get my bluetooth GPS charged up (if I can find my US --> UK adaptor)!

Rafe,

Thanks and I look forward to your feedback! I'm looking to develop some other Bluetooth applications so if you have any ideas please feel free to post them here.

Best Regards,
Dennis

What about a way to transfer mp3 sound to a BT headset...

Hi Dennis, this looks really exciting. Forgive the ignorance on my part, but am I right in saying this is only for Sony's phones, and incompatible with Nokia's? (eg my 6600)

Yours in hope 😊

Will

Will,

Thanks for the feedback. Right now it's only available for UIQ and then I'll be porting to S60. I will keep you posted and definitely get you a copy to beta test.

Thanks,
Dennis

That's really good of you Dennis - look forward to hearing from you in the not-too-distant future. Good luck

Will

Tested it with p900 and EMTAC (standard GPS from Wayfinder).
Works perfect.
But when it refreshes the screen, it refreshes the whole screen instead of refreshing data only.

I'd be very happy to help and even purchase what ever Bluetooth GPS receiver you suggest.

I run a computer store in Markham Canada and all the employees have P900's. We were unset to find that the only GPS solution around that works is in English and relies on a pay for use mapping system.

We are hoping that you can come up with a solution with Canada (Toronto) maps and talking directions and the works.

For free or not, we are willing to help in any way we can.

Paul.

Hi,

I have tried to test soft with P800 and SANAV BT40, but because SANAV BT40 need not any pairing code I am not able to connect devices together 😞
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks for all of your feedback and you can download the latest version from here:

http://www.db75.com/symbian/bluegps/

I'll keep this page up to date with the latest information about BlueGPS. In this new release you can upload your location data to the server and then view the data on-line or download it in .csv format. You should then be able to import it into your favorite mapping program. Enjoy and please contact me if you run into any problems!

Best Regards,
Dennis

Hi David, thanks for the updates. Just wondering if you had started development for the Nokia 6600?

Nice program! However, I do have a few ideas for suggestions for you:

1. Remember the last device that we were connected to, and try to connect directly to it, instead of forcing a scan every time.
2. Allow for units of choice to be displayed (kmph vs mph)
3. Allow for setting of Destination/Origin points. That is on the main screen, I would like to be able to see the co-ordinates of where I am trying to go, or be able to save the co-ordinates of "here" so that I can get back here. This can be very useful for "geocaching" and/or base return activities.
4. (Based on the above) Show the "as the crow flies" distance between the current location and the desired location.

Hope this is useful to you,
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the feedback and I'll see if I can get these features implemented in a future version. Right now I'm doing a good bit of work on the UI so the next release should definitely have a better look and feel.

Best Regards,
Dennis

I am new to this forum and a new user of BlueGPS. I have started using it yesterday when I installed my Parrot CK3300 car kit installation with in-built GPS. The connecting was a breeze, it started working instantly. I agree on implementation of the possibility to change units (we Europeans are more used to kilometres) and perhaps also the more common way of showing the coordinates? Current writing is in xxxx.xxxx format and I am not that ingenious to understand it. I'm more used to "xx deg xx min" format.
On the other hand, when I tried out PowerNavigation 1.02 for P900, I couldn't get it connected to my carkit GPS, it just didn't connect. GPS bluetooth receiver was found but the software didn't show any information, although the program has a lot of options, including your future one, entering waypoints, calculating route etc... But, why should we be spending the money on a non-working payware, I will wait for the community to help you build (with suggestions, of course) a nice and customized piece of free or rather cheap high quality software.

Way to go, Dennis! I'll keep my fingers crossed and also log to this forum often, to see how things are progressing.

Best regards,

Slovenia.

Dusan,

Thanks for your response and I'm working hard to keep adding new functionality. Please keep checking my site for current news and right now I'm working on a new UI. This was supplied to me from a friend and I'm working to get the graphics implemented. It should be a nice improvement over the current version. Please keep the feedback coming and thanks again.

Best Regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis

I have just seen your project of connecting a Bluetooth receiver to a Sony / Ericsson Phone.

On my side just entered with a Nokia 6600 Phone and a Fortuna Bluetooth GPS receiver.

I wonder if you have already a solution for this Nokia 6600 phone ? Or could you help me with some source code to change it for this phone. No financial interest on my side. In a later stage I want to have a solution for small moving robots for educational purposes.

I could also make some tests for you with my equipment combination if you are interested in.

Regards

Jack

I don't currently have a version for the 6600 but I can tell you it will be coming in a few weeks. I'm working on getting a new UI in place for the P800/900 and then I'll start working on porting to S60. I hope this helps.

Hi there!

Great, a 6600 version would be wonderful. How's the progress?

Thanx, Martijn

It would be really great if you could make this app work with the Motorola 3G phones - A920/A925 which have built in gps systems and use UIQ. Any chance you could look into it? There is an SDK for the Motos at http://www.motocoders.com

I have a P900 and would love to use it with GPS. Is there a consensus on which is the best and where it can be bought.

TIA

KC

For some reason it displays weird data with Navman 4460 Gps.
I'm getting a latitude of "36000.0000," and longitude of "2000.0000,E",
but it sometimes changes to some other value like 6000.

Also, is there any way you could share the source-code? I'm writing
java-program for P900 that does the same, but I'm not able to connect
to the device. I can't find any services on it and I don't really know what
services there should be. If you could help me with info on how to
connect to the device, I'll solv the rest myselv =) (use mail please)

Thanks!

// Storm (zeihor AT hotmail DOT removeme COM)

I solved it all myself. It was actually easier than I thought =)
No need to search for services or whatnot, just connect to the device on port 1.

Hi Dennis,

This is really interesting and have been looking for such a program. I would be interested in learning more about this.

For example, what mapping software can we use with this and if there is any on-line mapping that is available. Please advise.

By the way, where is your store so we can visit and see what other P900 programs are available. Thanks.

I'm using the Delta737 msg to write a suggestion to DB75...sorry for such creasy bridge!

Looking for a bluetooth idea to develop?

Why only Bluetooth?

It is long time that I've and an idea, I fill really useful, but up to now only a part of its concept have been solved (see the Advanced Call Manager at http://my-symbian.com/uiq/applications/applications.php?fldAuto=638&faq=2).

I'm speaking about an "automatic answer machine for P900". Here are some details of my idea. :call:
- up to 10sec for an automatic answer (i.e. "Pls leave a msg..."😉
- up to 20sec to leave a msg for incoming calls
- possibility to set up a template of SMS to send automatically to the incoming calls
- possibility to set filters/lists
. to automatically answer with an SMS (i.e. to mobiles)
. to make available the possibility to leave a 20" msg
. to reject incoming calls in a 'Black list'
. to let some listed number pass as normal calls
- possibility to activate the SMS Machine and the Voice Recorder in mixed combination (some calls could receive only a answer via SMS, some could leave a voice msg, some both the option, some would be rejected...)
If you fill this idea interesting, you can be sure I will be really interested in...and I fill many people with me!
Let mi know if the concept is clear to you.
Bye
Sergiovery
