When everything goes horribly wrong in Nokia Software Update
Published by Steve Litchfield at 17:03 GMT, October 30th
Q. I was trying to upgrade my S60 smartphone using Nokia Software Update, but after the download and 'installing' sections were complete, the NSU error dialog appeared, advising me to 'Retry'. But the device itself appears dead, with no backlight and no messages. And 'Retry' does nothing.
A. Before rushing off to the local Nokia Service Centre:
- remove the battery from your phone
- wait a good minute or so (for ALL the charge to leak out of the circuits)
- reinsert the battery and press the power button for a few seconds. Does the Nokia logo appear on the screen (albeit with no backlight), frozen? NB: for the E90, look at the INNER screen!
- if you see the logo, however dimly, then relax, because the device is not really frozen, it's simply awaiting instructions. Close down NSU, reboot your PC (just in case) and then connect the phone to your PC again
- fire up Nokia Software Update again. Your phone will be recognised after a short wait (amazingly), the firmware update downloaded again and installed again - and this time, hopefully, the update will 'take' and the phone will restart normally.
- if the phone restarted OK, ignore any further errors from NSU and close it down - its job is done

Steve, you my friend are a star !
I tried running the NSU a few times before and had actually given up on that being an option, although I was fairly interested in why the inner screen was displaying the NOKIA logo.
I had just accepted the fact that the only realistic option left was to take it to a service point, when I found this post.
You have saved me hassle, time, and I'm sure a load of money and grief too.
I am very grateful and will be raising a glass or two to you later ! :)

Comment: This has been a difficult to reconnect my phone and I have taken my phone to a nokia repair center. The experience has not been pleasant and not to talk about the inconvenience. My problems with NSU is that I think nokia is not being robust in its efforts to smooth out the process. I suspect that UK networks have made in difficult by commissioning their own firmware and individuals wanting the latest Nokia firmware. My phone broke down upgrading from the Orange 13.0.0.03.
