Problems installing and removing Smart2Go

Q. I'm having real problems installing Smart2Go onto my smartphone. What tips can you offer?
A. Ah yes, Smart2Go. Nokia get full marks for the intuitive interface and clever navigation subscription system, but deserve only brickbats for the installation system. Things to note:
- The easiest way to use Smart2Go is using a flat rate data connection to load in maps as you need them. Doing it this way means that you're unlikely to hit any problems.
- Failing that, you can use MapLoader to install whole countries at a time. Unfortunately, Nokia has chosen to use a labyrinthine folder system on your memory card, with many hundreds of folders and files, and each one has to be created and installed - this can take an age. Allow a couple of hours for a medium size country!
- This folder system also uses up more memory card space than it should, because few of the hundreds of files use anywhere near the 'cluster size' on your card.
- When removing Smart2Go, the sheer number of files and folders will confuse the S60 application system. So either use MapLoader's 'Clear all maps on device' function, with your card loaded up in 'Mass storage' mode, or else use Windows Explorer to find and delete the appropriate folder tree under \Private' on the card. Either way, it'll take a while to complete (again). After this, you can probably uninstall Smart2Go in the normal way!
