How do I take my stuff from my old Nokia 9210i to my new 9500?

Q. I’m getting my Nokia 9500 shortly and am a bit worried about how to move everything across from my old Nokia 9210i. Can you spell it out for me, please?

A. You shouldn’t have too many problems, although it’s important to note that the two devices use completely different versions of the Symbian operating system, so you shouldn’t just stick your 9210i MMC in the 9500 and expect things to work. In brief:

  1. Get your core Calendar and Contacts information across either by synchronizing with Outlook or by using the 9500’s Data Mover utility.
  2. Drag and drop any documents from the 9210i ‘C’ disk backup folder on your PC to a similar location on your 9500.
  3. Put your MMC in the 9500 and use the 9500’s ‘Convert MMC’ function. This renames the old \System folder to avoid problems.
  4. Re-install all your third party applications from their original SIS files, checking compatibility as you go.
