Do I need a firewall?

Q. On my PC I have the ZoneAlarm firewall loaded all the time, to protect myself against Internet-borne nasties. Do I need to do something similar for my smartphone?

Despite switching to Flight mode overnight, my battery is still sucked dry!

Q. I switch my P900 to ‘Flight’ mode overnight, in an attempt to try and prolong my battery life. I’m often travelling and away from an easy way of recharging and I’m regularly mystified by the way the P900’s battery gets sucked dry even when I’m not using it.

My P910 freezes at the startup screen, how can I get it working again?

Q. My P910i has frozen on me. After inputting my PIN, the device freezes while still showing the startup screen. I've tried resetting, obviously, to no avail. The only thing of note was that I'd installed half a dozen shareware utilities a couple of days before.

How can I find out whether there's a newer version of the operating system for my Sony Ericsson P900?

Q. How can I find out whether there's a newer version of the operating system for my Sony Ericsson P900? I know it supports user updating but I can't see a list of versions anywhere on the web.

How can I speed up launching of my most-used applications?

Q. I’m always struggling to find and launch applications on my Sony Ericsson smartphone, the simple act of navigating between them seems to take an eternity. What do others do to speed things up?

How can I reclaim wasted memory in the Messaging system?

Q. I've had a message saying that my P800 is running low on memory. When I checked in the Storage Manager, just 0.8MB was available. My messages used the most space (4.4MB), even after I deleted everything in my Inbox, Outbox, Draft and Sent folders. How can I reclaim this space?

How can I open local HTML files on my P800 or P900?

Q. How can I open local HTML files, i.e. pages stored on the smartphone rather than on the Internet, complete with their images and links?

Is there a way to set my daily alarm to just sound on specific days?

Q. I work on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays only. Is there a way to get my Sony Ericsson smartphone to wake me up only on those days and not on Thursdays or Fridays? I have my alarm set to ‘Workdays’ at the moment.

Why can't I install P900 programs on the Motorola A925, which also runs UIQ?

Q. I’ve bought a Motorola A925 smartphone, which seems to run Symbian UIQ in pretty much the same way as the Sony Ericsson P900, so I’m hoping you can help me. Some of the programs I want to try out simply won’t install. Do I need to ask every single developer for an A925-compatible version?

Why does my P910i keep changing its IMEI code?

Q. I've been using a P910i for the last three months, but I'm having trouble registering applications. For starters, the IMEI reported by most (but not all) applications (starting with "14") is different from that printed on the phone itself (starting with "35"). Then, when I try and sort the problem out by resetting the unit, the reported IMEI changes and I have to request new registration codes for all my third party programs. What's going on?

How can I install mainstream UIQ software onto the Motorola A1000?

Q. I notice that there is now Route 66 GPS software for the Symbian UIQ platform. I also read that it will work with the Motorola A1000, even though it's designed for the Sony Ericsson P910. Could you tell me how this is possible as the software is supplied on Memory Stick? Also, how do I download software to my A1000? I have been downloading freeware via Bluetooth. But when I come to open it, the phone tells me there is no program to open the attempted installation.

Why do email messages appear downloaded and then disappear?

Q. Messaging shows up my POP3 Inbox emails properly at first but then the next day I find most of them have been lost. Is email syncing broken?

Should I be worried about viruses for my Symbian smartphone?

Q. I've read a lot in the press about a Cabir virus outbreak for Symbian smartphones. Should I be worried, and what can I do to protect myself?
