Zane Grey almost single-handedly created the Western as a literary genre with his stories of semi-outlaw heroes set against the beautiful but harsh landscape of the American West. Originally named Pearl Gray (his parents must have had a sense of humor), Grey was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1872, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in dentistry. He practiced in New York City where he began to write, however, it was during a trip to the West in 1908 that Grey discovered his true calling: writing western-themed novels.
He produced over ninety works, many of which were turned into famous movie westerns, and sold an astounding 17 million copies during his lifetime. Grey moved west to Altadena, California in 1918, where he indulged his love of deep-sea fishing, and died there in 1939.
