Author's Description
GPL-2 is the second version of GPL 1.x GSM navigation application. The second version includes a set of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes.
CHANGES IN 2.09 VS. 2.00
1. Bugfix for 6600: tab icons blurred with solid square.
2. Bugfix for 6600: text titles for waypoint details trimmed.
3. Bugfix in Detected pan view: cell networks detection timeout (2 minutes max) has been introduced. Timeout time is displayed during selection.
4. Bugfix in Detected pan view: display warning upon Login to cell network that login sets Network Selection to Manual mode.
5. Bugfix in Detected pan view: detection message modal note is not removed upon detection completion thus simulating hanging effect. This buggy behaviour has been eliminated now.
INSTALLATION
When you install GPL-2 it does not override GPL 1.x. These both major versions can run side-by-side.
LICENSING
GPL-2 employs the same licensing algorithm as GPL 1.x. It means that if you already have activation key for GPL 1.x it will suit GPL-2 as well. It also means that if you already have licensed GPL 1.x installed on your smartphone GPL-2 will not require activation key and enters activated mode automatically using the activation key of GPL 1.x.
SHIPPING
The application is delivered as a standard Symbian installation package that can be installed from internet or from your PC. Simply run the installation.
CHANGES IN 2.00
The following changes have been accomplished in GPL-2 against GPL 1.x:
1. Timing/duration introduced. The application shows duration intervals for the whole tracking and for each waypoint.
2. Automatic update of Cell, Network, and Battery pans. Update softkey has been removed. Cell pan is updated once per second. Network pan is updated once per two seconds. Battery pan is updated once per five seconds.
3. Enhancements, optimizations, and bug fixes.
USAGE NOTES (for users new to GPL)
GPL is a GSM navigation application that resembles behaviour of a simple GPS tracker. The concept of GSM navigation tracking implemented in GPL is a stack of waypoints (GSM network cells) collected on the tracking pan and rolled back when you return to already passed waypoint. GPL is a cheap solution for navigation when your smartphone has no built-in GPS receiver.
The application could be useful when you are travelling by hiking in unknown area. By starting tracking you get bound to your start point. Binding to start point is called warming up and it requires at least 20 seconds while you do not have to stand still. After that the principle of operation is very much like one of a simple GPS tracker. As you walk and change network cells the application informs you and adds new waypoints to the stack of passed waypoints. As soon as you return to any already passed waypoint the stack is unwinded to that waypoint. Thus with your eyes and GPL you can track your movements in the area. The application is equipped with special debouncing algorithm, which significantly reduces the effect of cell bouncing on the cell borders.
GPL is composed of several views: Phone, Cell, Track, Network, Detected, Battery, and About. The main functionality is concentrated on the Track and Detected pans. Other pans just show usefull operational information such as cell network parameters and battery statistics. Phone view shows general modem parameters and IMEI. Cell view shows current cell information. Network view shows current GSM network information. Battery view shows current status of battery. About view is used for application activation. Additionally you can get IMEI in the proper format for application activation.
Like said above Track view is where you can handle GSM navigation tracking. The view contains the dynamic stack of waypoints when tracking is on. It is crucial to note that after you start tracking do not exit the application, keep it in background. While tracking it does not require to be always active window but still needs to be in memory. After you start tracking it warms up at least 20 seconds getting bound to the initial waypoint. As soon as initial waypoint is captured it is added as number one in the waypoint stack. The format of waypoint is three numbers separated by colon, MNC:LAI:CID, where MNC is Mobile Network Code (identifies GSM network within country), LAI is Location Area ID, and CID is Cell ID. MCC (Mobile Country Code) is not shown since the application is not positioned as tool for crossing borders ;)
As you walk and pass new waypoints the application informs you about new waypoints with flashing notes. Even if the application is not active window flashing notes still appear. Each waypoint is numbered. The maximum number of waypoints is 128. This is pretty high even for hiking in big cities. Each new waypoint, where you have never been before, is put on top of the stack. If you enter the waypoint, which you already have in the stack, the stack is rolled back to that waypoint, which becomes the topmost, your current waypoint. It is clear indication that you are returning. When you turn tracking off the tracking is stopped but the stack is still shown. Clear Waypoints command of Options menu clears the stack.
On the Detected view with Update command of Options menu you can see what GSM networks your smartphone can detect. After detecting the application shows you the list of currently detected GSM networks. You can browse each network details or even login to listed network. Please note that you can login only to those networks, which have Available status, which means that your home cell provider has contract with that network's provider.
