Series 60 Devices News Headlines
Nokia today announced the addition of three new business targeted Series 60 phones to its portfolio. The Nokia E60, E61 and E70, the first of the new Nokia Eseries range. The phones are based on Series 60 3rd edition and Symbian OS v9.1. The Nokia E60 provides a classic design with 3G and WLAN functionality. The E61 is a GSM quad-band, WCDMA2100 (3G) phone with, a full keyboard on the phone, a 16 million colour screen, and support for all the major corporate email. The E70, with two varinats one for Europe/Asia (triband GSM with WCDMA) and one for the Americas (GSM50, in place of GSM 900) is an all in one messaging device with when opened up reveal a full messaging keyboard.
Nokia has announced the Symbian Signed Freeware Route to Market, sponsored and paid for by themselves.
Long time tech book publisher O'Reilly moves into the Symbian space with Nokia Smartphone Hacks. Ewan's reviewed the book, and while it's full of useful info, the American focus and inclusion of Series 40 feel a bit strange in a Symbian targeted book.
Nokia's PC Suite has been updated to version 6.6.18 (from 6.6.16). New features include PC text messaging for the Nokia 3230, improved Internet connections and better connectivity stability. For those having problems with syncing this is a recommended upgrade.
F-Secure are reporting, via their weblog, that they have discovered a new Trojan targeting Series 60 phones. The Tojan deletes key system files (which will prevent some phone restarting) and write a random password to the MMC (so you can not access data on the MMC). The Trojan pretends to be a pirated copy application (InstantSIS). As F-Secure state: 'Cardblock.A is not a threat to people who don't use pirate copied software'.
Audible, provider of electronic audio books and other audio content, will soon make a solution available for Series 60 phones. The AudibleAir service for Series 60 is being demoed at CITA. AudibleAir will allow you to download Audible content over the air.
India based Consign Technology has released a $199 Royalty free 'Lite' edition of its GoDB development system for Symbian 60 Phone series. GoDB Lite Edition is targeted at developers looking to developing simple applications, utilities and 2D Games.
Devlex have released some very nice bluetooth connectivity applications for Series 60; PhoneFile accesses your smartphone's memory from a command line prompt; Remote Commander lets you control a Powerpoint presentation; and Remote Tunes gives you a remote control for Apple's iTunes.
SplashBlog from SplashData is now available for Series 60. SplashBlog streamlines the process of mobile photoblogging, allowing users to capture an image and publish it to an online photoblog. The client application for the phone is free and comes with a free online photoblog account at SplashBlog.com (for upto 100 images, subsequently the service is $29 a year). SplashBlog was previously available as an award winning application on the Palm OS and a UIQ version will be available shortly.
Nokia has formally announced the Nokia 3250 this morning. It will fit in Nokia's new XpressMusic branding (for handsets with dedicated music buttons and 3.5 mm headphone sockets). Key features inlcudes a 2MP camera, expandable storage up to 1GB for music via microSD (10 MB internal), a 3.5mm headphone socket, support for leading music file formats (MP3, M4A, WMA, AAC and eAAC+), 10 hours of music playtime, stereo FM (visual) radio, Bluetooth 2.0, Series 60 Platform 3 with Symbian OS 9.1 as the software package and an innovative twist design (oh and it's a phone too with tri-band GSM and EDGE support). The phone is expectd to cost approximately €350, and be available in Q1 2006.
Nokia has been showing off a forthcoming Series 60 phone, the Nokia 3250, at the Trends Berlin event last night. The 3250 is a music phone (as a 3 series phone it is likely to be targeted as a budget version of the N91 - no WiFi and no hard disk). Features include a fully rotatable bottom section incorprating a 2.0 MP camera (similar to the N90 in design, but lower quality lens), with music buttons on one side and a standard (3230 like) keypad on the other. Forum Nokia have released an updated version of CodeWarrior (Thanks to NewLC for the news). Updates include support for OS 9.1 and a new compiler/linker.

In other words we'll help you guys with some developers and support in "other areas" to work on a MIDP authoruing tool that will be compatible with our phones (and others). Good to see a little more embracing of the Open Source Community from Nokia.
