Nokia's Ovi Share just acquired geotagging! From now on, any new images that are uploaded will get their EXIF data checked for location information. As you can see if you read below the break, this means that images can be automatically addressed and mapped. This brings Ovi Share into the same ballgame as Flickr and Picasa Web. Comments welcome on what's needed next in Ovi Share.

Here's an image from a trip to London, correctly addressed by Ovi Share and correctly mapped:

Is there a way to display all media from a trip overlaid on a larger map? If so, please forgive my naiveity and share the info!

Established Social Networks Are Ruling the Mobile Networking Space

Mobile Social networks are not a big hit, according to new Nielsen Resarch (writes MoCoNews). With only 1.7% of UK mobile users using a social network specifically designed for mobile users. While users are moving to social networks via their handsets, the big winners in the connecting people stakes are, not surprisingly, the behemoths that exist on the desktop.Facebook's mobile site m.facebook.com accounts for over half a million hits and 9% of all UK mobile web users.

This isn't surprising, given the move to easy access on mobile versions of many of the big Web 2.0 sites, as well as a general feeling in web circles that your data should be accessible no matter where you are, no matter what device you're on. Any social network launching today that decides to target mobile will be welcome, but unless it has a strong back end accessible from both a desktop PC and perhaps even existing services (such as Twitter), then it's not going to get a lot of traction, fancy Location Based Services, geo-tagging pictures and 'where are my friends right now' features notwithstanding.

Ricky Cadden Reviews the Sony Ericsson W960

Ricky Cadden, over on Mobile Burn, takes a long hard look at the Sony Ericsson W960 Walkman phone, and finds a mixed bag, from a bright screen to a cheap stylus, a poor camera interface and of course a long look at music playback functionality, which gets a strong thumbs up albeit with a wish for a built in 3.5mm headphone socket and the ability to playback by genre. Ultimately the W960 comes up short in Cadden's estimation with a poor user interface, slow USB transfer and clunky camera to blame.

The Sony Ericsson W960 is a great looking smartphone with plenty of top-notch features to offer. However, the user interface and touch implementation make it difficult to get around, and frustrating to use.

...the flash is either on, or it is off. There is also no 'auto' setting, which makes things ever more frustrating, as it takes a minimum of 6 clicks to toggle the flash on or off.

One of the key features of the W960 is the Walkman music player interface, 8GB of internal storage, and dedicated, touch-sensitive media playback keys. Given that, I found it odd that the handset requires an additional adapter to use 3.5mm headphones. The Walkman music player application is certainly full of eye candy, and offers the ability to browse through your music by artist, album, playlists (created on the PC or device), and mood. I was very disappointed to not see the 'genre' option listed, as that's how I typically listen to my music.

Yeah, yeah, more hands-on with prototypes by other sites - you can tell we're a tinsy bit jealous - but then on the other hand devices like the N96 don't seem anywhere near finished yet and we'd rather wait for the real thing. Still, the N78 seems fairly complete, according to this latest hands on by PhoneReport, which provides lots of photos and makes a few new observations. (via Symbian World)

I'm still VERY wary about those light up keypad legends - didn't Nokia learn ANYTHING from the horrible white on silver labelling system on the N82?? What happens when you take the N78 outdoors into the sunlight? Shudder.

The only real problem seems to be over-stubborn clinging to originally-calculated routes - apart from that Arjen gives this sat-nav solution a green light on all fronts. I was sceptical about the way search matches are still shown in alphabetical order, but Arjen argues that the search match filtering is good enough to do without location-sorted results.

Read on

CorePlayer Mobile updated. Now supports YouTube!

CoreCodec just announced the availability of version 1.24 of its CorePlayer Mobile for all platforms including S60 3rd Edition and UIQ 3. The YouTube support might not be interesting for some S60 3rd Edition users but for the UIQ 3 community, it is the icing on the cake because for the first time, FLV videos can be played on UIQ 3 smartphones without conversion. See below for UIQ 3 screenshots, links and comments.

Users can now search and watch YouTube videos directly on our UIQ 3 smartphones using CorePlayer Mobile latest version (1.24), there’s YouTube support which, during my test, worked beautifully (on 3G and WiFi connection).

This is one of the most requested functions from the UIQ 3 community and, although there is no support to play YouTube through the internet browser yet, the current function is useable and makes my P1i a true mobile workhorse and entertainment device. Commenting on the new release, Dan Marlin (aka Betaboy), CEO of CoreCodec, in his email to me said that this is only the beginning. “In future versions we are adding full YT support that includes video uploading, account login, related, more, email link, bookmarks. So this is really just the beginning of what our ‘Channels’ page will be…. Channels will list our current ‘HOT’ websites (like Veoh)”.

Here are some screenshots of CorePlayer Mobile's YouTube browser in action on my Sony Ericsson P1i :

Here's the changelog of the new version :

Version 1.2.4 build 4204 (4187 for Symbian) (20080509):

- FIX: YouTube seeking issues
- FIX: YouTube navigation on small screens
- FIX: Busy indicator on Palm and Symbian
- FIX: Revision3 RSS reading (watch out for the huge bandwidth needs)
- FIX: Keyframe issue on some rare AVC streams
- FIX: OS X: fix some display issues
- FIX: OS X: Conversion of some UTF16 strings
- FIX: Symbian: TCP/UDP connections are less blocking and more stable
- FIX: Symbian: Audio handling is more robust
- FIX: Symbian: UIQ3 backlight issues
- FIX: Symbian: Possible crash when playing MP3 and AVC
- FIX: Win32: File association on Vista
- ADD: FLV playback support (no VP6)
- ADD: F4V file extension
- ADD: Get the duration from RSS feeds
- ADD: Option to keep the screen on when playing audio files (too)
- ADD: Reading cover art from Zune folders
- ADD: Symbian: Keep the preferred access point in the preferences
- ADD: Symbian: Show the currently selected item in enums

dotMobi Buys Mowser For Mobile Web Integration

Congrats to Russ Beattie and Mike Rowehl, the guys behind Mowser. It may well have looked dead and buried a few weeks ago, but the service has been bought by the dotMobi consortium. Reporting on Dev.Mobi, James Pearce charts out the use of their new toy, namely to drive Opt-In mobilisation of websites, integrating the Mowser Directory, and of course using the (re)formatting technology.

We're very excited about this. Russell Beattie and Mike Rowehl are both very talented mobile gurus and they'll be joining the dotMobi team to help us do cool things with their technology. We did this deal because Mowser fits really well into lots of our current projects.
James Pearce

This is great news - Miker and I got pinged by a surprising number of people and companies interested in Mowser, but we went with dotMobi because they were first, enthusiastic, and we felt they would provide a good home for our work. While we didn't get rich on the deal by any stretch, I've been able to pay off a bunch of debts (and not worry about stuff like rent and food) which has been a huge load off my mind.
Russ Beattie

They're already hooked up with folks looking to go mobile and in a unique position to offer the service without the hurdles Russ and I had in reaching motivated site owners. Like we discussed at the last Mobile Monday in Silicon Valley, one of the most important aspects of planning out a mobile business is to have the right partnerships in place to give you a strong market channel.
Mike Rowehl

Congrats all round, nice to have a happy ending for the end of the week.
