Gallery: Nokia E66

The Nokia E66 is Nokia's business focused middle of the range device. It might be considered voice-centric, but retains the capabilities (software wise) of its sister device the E71. Compataible with Microsoft Exchange, Intelisync, Visto, Seven and Good push email it is best suited as a read-only email device. It has a 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera, integrated GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB and Infrared.
You can view the Flickr Photoset here.

E66 Slide Closed
The E66's slide is very solid. Its assisted so need little effort to get it into place and has a nice solid action with little or no wobble. Its well balanced in the hand in either open or closed positions.

Illuminated one touch keys
Here you can see the one touch keys within the main control cluster. In some of the other pictures you'll note that the illumination is less visible. This is a particular problem when outside in bright light... although most people will probably have muscle memory for these keys before too long.

E66 Slide Open
One of the nice things about the E66 is it has no slider mechanisms around the keypad - this allows for a wider keypad that you see on some slider phones (e.g. E65). There's also a gap between the slide and the top of the keyboard which avoids the usual cramped-top-row issue sliders can suffer from.

Keypad
The E66's keypad is similar to that of the E51. Both are very usable despite taking up a relatively small volume. Tactile feedback and spacing is good - it's hard to see, given the constraints, how this could be improved.

Red power button
Coloured red to underline that it is a decision making button (business users like some clear definitions!)... also serves to remind people it can be used to switch profiles.

E66 Calendar
The E66 has a tweaked version of the E66 Calendar. This photo shows the new month view where the screen is split in half. It is a great improvement over the standard S60 application.

Media
Multimedia application include the Music store, Podcasting, Music player, Share online and more.

Business applicayion
The E66 has a decent suite of business applications. Intranet is a short cut for VPN connections. Quickoffice, PDF and Zip should handle most email attachments. There's also a multi lingual dictionary bundled with the phone in addition to some of S60's standard offerings.

Emails
The E66 is best as a read only email device, although it is perfectly capable of sending and reply to emails. There's support for Microsoft Exchange, Visto, Seven, Good and Intellisync. Standard personal emails addresses (e.g. GMail) can also be set up very easily using the email configuration wizard (you should only need to enter your email address and password).

Landscape UI
The E66 switches back and forth between landscape and portrait mode thanks to automatic screen rotation powered by the accelerometer. This takes less than a second.

Calendar in landscape mode
Landscape UI makes some application easy to use. The best example is probably web browsing, but Calendar deserves a mention here and does Quickoffice.

microSD card slot
Accessible once you removed the back plate is the microSD card slot. It may be a bit fiddly, but these days, with bigger memory cards, the need to swap cards in and out is much reduced.

3.2 megapixel camera
The E66's camera doesn't measure up to the Nseries, but its still quite good. The auto-focus should mean far fewer fuzzy pictures, but the CMOS sensor is on the small side which results it quite a lot of noise and artefacts in captured images. It also seems to wash out a lot of photos. Not dissimilar to early N73's (although software updates have greatly improved that camera).

E66 from the back
Both E66 variants feature this metal backing. There's a 1000 mAh battery under here. Good for 24 hours strenuous use or 2 days + with lighter usage.

E66 vs E65
Here's the immediate predecessor to the E66. They are roughly the same size, but the E66 packs in a bigger screen, a better keyboard, more multimedia features, more standard ports (USB, 2.55mm audio vs POP port), and upgraded hardware (GPS, improved camera).

Here you can see that the E66 is notably thinner than the E65. For this reason the E66 is smaller in volume.

Eseries family
From QWERTY to keypad, from big to small. The Eseries range now offers a decent portfolio of business focused devices. Nokia have come a long way since the announcement of the E60 (hideously blocky), E61 (a bit big and square with a barely adequate keyboard) and E71 (nice concept, but not mainstream)... although much of the improvement is in the performance and extra hardware. The new phones makes the old ones look very slow, and the multimedia upgrades are very welcome.

E71 vs E66
The E71 is wider than than the E66, but has a bigger front surface area (it is also slightly thinner). For most people the size difference will not be that noticeable. The difference is really around whether you want a phone or messaging centric device. Both offer the same on board software and multimedia hardware. The E71 is best for those looking to do substantial text entry on the phone... outside of that it's going to come down to personal preference.

E71 vs E66 keypad
This picture explains the real difference between the E66 and the E71. One is optimised for text entry as a messaging device - the other is more of an all rounder. The E71 offers only landscape UI - the E66 thanks to its accelerometer offers both landscape and portrait.

E66 vs E51
It looks much bigger with the slide open, but that is somewhat deceptive (see next picture).

E51 vs E66
The E66 is a step up from the E51. However the E51 may server better if you just want a phone with some enterprise features. The E66 has improved software and more versatile hardware. The bigger screen is very welcome, especially when browsing or viewing large amounts of information on the screen. On the other hand the E51 is 6cc smaller in volume and some will prefer the traditional candy bar form factor.
