Gallery: Nokia 6700 slide (6700s)
Published by Rafe Blandford at
The Nokia 6700 slide (also known as the 6700s) is a S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 smartphone with a slider form factor. It features an aluminium casing / body and a five megapixel camera with Carl-Zeiss optics. It's one of the best examples of how the division between smartphone and feature phones has become increasingly blurred. This should be considered at lower end of the mid tier (or the upper end of the low tier) - a distinction which depends on the market you are looking at.

Nokia 6700s numeric keypad
The 6700s numeric keypad is necessarily small, with a slightly cramped top row, but is surprising comfortable to use. It is notably better than the 6120 and 5630 for example. Those with big hands might want to stay away, but the comment really applies to the whole phone!

N86 vs 6700s
The Nokia 6700s is actually a lot small than this picture suggests - the N86 is a chunkier phone (as you would expect as it has a bigger screen, bigger camera modules and many extra hardware features).

Battery cover release
The 6700s has an unusual battery release mechanism. There's a small tab that needs to be depressed before the back cover can lift off. The small tab can only be accessed by opening the microUSB port cover.

6700s slide open
The slide itself is of good quality, with very little give in either slide open or closed mode. The slide is spring assisted, so it closes with a satisfying thunk. The phone settings allow you to control what happens when you open or closed the slide (e.g. locking the phone, answering a call, ending a call). As you can also see in this picture the standard S60 application suite is present.

Power port, microUSB port and 2.5mm audio port (left to right). The inclusion of a 2.5mm audio port instead is the more standard 3.5mm is a disappointment, but is probably due to space constraints.

Nokia 6700 Slide closed
The Nokia 6700 slide (also known as the 6700s) with the slider closed. With the slide the 6700s comfortable fits into the hand. It's one of the smallest smartphones I've seen. The line between smartphone and feature phones has become increasingly blurred over the last few years and there's no better example than the 6700s. The main hardware feature of the 6700s is its 5 megapixel camera. This phones does NOT have WiFi connectivity or a GPS (standard on most other Nokia smartphones). This particular 6700s was purchased, as PAYG (pre-pay) handset, from Tesco Mobile for £104 (€123, US $157).

Nokia 6700s control cluster
The 6700s control cluster is one of the better ones I've seen on a small phones. The D-pad is large and has good tactile feedback, but the surrounding buttons still have plenty of space. Note also the use of the house icon on the menu key (in place of the S60 swirl). The end key double as the power key on this device.

Materials
The materials on the 6700s are impressive for a budget smartphone. It is almost completely encased in aluminium, which gives the phone a more expensive feel than the plastics typically found at this price level. It also make the phone feel more robust, but that's more of a subjective assessment.

Nokia 6700s versus E55
This picture shows how diminutive the 6700s. The E55, already one of Nokia's smallest smartphones looks a lot bigger. However it worth noting that, due to it slider form factor, the 6700s is significantly thicker than the E55.

Nokia 6120 versus 6700s
The 6120 has long been a favourite among those looking for a smaller smartphone. The 6700s and forthcoming C5 both make worth replacement for those looking for a similarly sized phone, who didn't like the plastic styling of the 5630.

microSD slot
The phone memory can be expanded via the microSD card slot. The phone ships with a 2GB card, which is probably going to be sufficient for the majority of users.

BL-4CT battery
The 860 mAh battery is on the small side, but should be sufficient. I found it managed about 3 days on standby with light usage - and about a day and half with heavier usage. However battery life is very much dependent on individual usage conditions and circumstances.

Nokia 6700s versus N97
David against Goliath? The two ends of Nokia's smartphone portfolio. Representing two completely different types of devices. Both of course are running the Symbian platform (and the majority of the code is common between them).

Camera mode
The now standard Nokia camera application is included on the 6700s. The icons down the right hand side of the screen control all of the key settings. For a phone costing around £100 (on PAYG) it's a very good camera. It won't measure up to some of Nokia's other 5 megapixel cameras, but still gives decent results, especially in well lit conditions. Nokia is choosing a mixture of EDOF lens camera (advantage - fast picture taking and uses less physical space) and auto-focus (often with Carl-Zeiss optics) camera (advantage - gives the user more control. Which one is best depends on your personal opinion and the situation a picture is being taken in.

Nokia AC-15X charger open
The Nokia AC-15X has an unusual feature for a UK plug, a sliding top pin. This means the charger is more compacted - ideal for travelling.

Extra applications
The usual array of extra Nokia applications. Notable is the inclusion of Ovi Sync, which makes it very easy to backup contact, calendar and notes data to Nokia's online Ovi.com service.

Share application
On the main application screen there is a share folder, which contains various sharing and social media applications (and Office apps too - looking a bit out of place). It's the first Nokia phone I can think of that ships with a Twiiter app (which in reality is just a shortcut to the mobile site).

The 6700s comes with the phone, a battery (not shown), manual, microUSB cable, chargers and headphones (2.5mm). In keeping with the budget nature of the phone the included microUSB cable is just a few centimetres long.
