BBC open up national streaming radio to mobile web browsers

It’s a subtle tweak, but the addition of live streaming to the mobile web pages for the BBC’s UK National Stations is an important addition. Exec producer JamesSimcock goes into some of the thinking behind the decision on the BBC Internet Blog, but the main reason is user expectation – with more flat rate devices and wi-fi connections, bill shock is no longer the over-riding issue.

Read on in the full article.

Live links do not work

I'm in Australia and when i try and open a live link on my 5800, it opens up Real Player on my phone but then displays the msg "Disconnected. Try reconnect?"

It allows me to download the podcasted mp3's though. Any ideas why this might happen. Is it restricted to users in the Uk perhaps?

Unhappy Doesn't work in Finland

I'm in Finland and when I try and open a live link on my N95 8GB, it opens up RealPlayer on my phone but then displays the message "Unable to connect".

I can listen to the RealPlayer streams from the links on the Beebotron Lite:
http://beebotron.org/indexlite.php?reload

But the BBC has just added an announcement that those streams will be turned off at the end of May :(

I'm in Holland and am having the same problem (Unable to connect). This even applies to the World Service...

I guess it could be my mobile provider (T-Mobile) blocking this kind of use; I'll try it on my home WiFi network and see what happens...

Ewan,

Great article, thanks but given my handset already has a built in FM Radio it's not really a ground breaking development to me personally to be able to stream all the national BBC radio stations. Now if this new change were to include TV station streaming too then we would be talking.

Being an 'industry insider' perhaps you can enlighten me as to why those 'lazy arse bums' at the BBC are so irritatingly random in their iPlayer app support for Nokia handsets... E.g. N95/N95 8GB is supported but N82 is NOT, 5800 is supported but X6 is NOT. I cannot understand the small number of supported Nokia devices, Nokia 5800, E71, N85, N86, N95/N95 8GB, N96 & N97 given the architecture for most Nokia S60v3 & S60v5 handsets is so close.

Any info greatfully received as the BBC aren't forthcoming as to why their iPlayer support is so patchy on Nokias.

S.

True, a good point but give it a few months and no-one will be able to listen to 6 Music when the BBC swings the axe on the station.

I have rarely used the built-in FM radio on my phone because reception is rubbish (strong stations only), and tuning is slow. I also like BBC 6music and suspect it may get saved!
I've tried these new links, but they don't work for my E51. I used to use Real Audio streams, using links from the beebotron website, but these don't work now. Any tips from knowledgeable readers?

Only available in U.K.

For those that have tried to use this service outside of U.K.:

"This service is currently offered to users in the UK only."

BBC Mobile, Radio & Music FAQ

Shame!

Yourmuze.fm does offer an alternative way to listen to BBC's U.K. radio programmes overseas.
