V2.1 Firmware update available Mon 1st Feb
Nokia N97 software update 2.1

Dear updaters
Nokia N97 software update 2.1
The Nokia N97 software update release 2.1 will be available through the Nokia Software Updater on Monday 1 February. The software version number will be 21.0.045 (RM-505) or 21.2.045 (RM-507) depending on your region, and should be available by 08:00 GMT. The release for N97 China 2G (RM-506) will follow shortly. This 2.1 release offers additional improvements to the 2.0 release made last year.
Software availability
As usual, we will published standard non-customised versions of the software, with country (SIM-free) and operator versions following over the next few days and weeks. The Nokia N97 (and several other devices) can check automatically for new software. Go to Menu > Applications > SW Update and enable automatic checking. MyNokia members will also receive an SMS stating "new software is available" as the deployment progresses. To register, go to Menu > Applications > My Nokia > Sign up or visit www.nokia.com/mynokia.
Using your PC to update
Initially, this software update is only available through the Nokia Software Updater. Due to wealth of new content available in this release, the over-the-air "FOTA" packages are larger than normal (around 17MB) and to allow for sufficient testing, delivery will be slightly delayed.
Backups before updating your Nokia N97 are not essential, but to help you get the most from your new software, we recommend that you sync your device or make a backup excluding settings before updating. After the update, reset your device by keying *#7370# and enter your lock code (default = 12345). Then you can resync your device and restore your backup. Finally, visit Ovi Store to download the latest versions of your favourite applications.
What's new
The software contains many fixes and improvements on the earlier releases including:
* Improved call reliability
* Smooth touch screen scrolling
* Browser improvements
* Music player improvements
* Improved image and video stability
Warm regards,
The Nokia Software Update team

Sums up remaining interest in this phone:
So we have the long awaited (since semi official rumours of Dec release) announcement of V2.1 fix to fix them all and basically the reaction is zip.
Apart from couple long standing and well versed power contributors and a few sulking recidivists like me (and others stuck on contract) seems many have moved on to pastures new. The thread is getting quieter seems to me, it happens to all handset specific threads but this seems to me also a somewhat early withering.

I bought the phone, but I don't belong to any of the categories you mention, and I still like it a lot. I just expected the update yesterday (1/28).

I hope V21 has fixes for the default ring tone issue, better RAM management and Maps 3.3 built into it.
Cheers.

I am not sure Maps 3.3 will be built-in with the FW, as it's quite a big App.
However, Maps is now freely downloadable now so it should not matter too much.

Like GJW i don't belong in any category you mention, I don't post very often but i log into the forum a couple of times a day just to catch up with discussions. I didn't acknowledge this thread as i had already read it on the Nokia forum, maybe it's the case for other AAS readers too (although i appreciate the thread Snoflake i really do) and like many who are happy with their phones i'm looking forward to this "mini" update and all the future updates ...... like i did over the course of the 2/3 years i spent with my N95.

I've never seen one since the big v20 firmware for the N95. Do Nokia actually release changelogs anymore?

I think the N95 changelog was the last one I seen aswell. Someone did mention releasing one on Nokia Disscussions I'll see if I can find the thread.

Hmmm, a new FW update eh? I'm not gettign too excited, as last time I had to wait around two weeks after v20 was released before I could access it, but will try it anyway tomorrow.
As with ajeet, I do hope it resolves the default ring tone bug AND the call answering bug, those two are the things I'd like sorted.
Hopefully, if people do update tomorrow, can we look forward to a very quick review for those of us who might not get access to it straightaway?
TIA.

From what i understand, Skype will be added after V21 via the internal Software Update in your Apps folder.

- Improved call reliability - Might tackle the default ringtone and "unable to answer" problems some people have been having
- Smooth touch screen scrolling - My applications list gets a little juddery when I try to scroll the first time I enter the folder because it's quite long. I wonder if this sort of thing is being dealt with
- Browser improvements - I hope "browser improvements" mean they've stopped it crashing and have made Mass Memory the default cache location
- Music player improvements - Mine is ok but maybe slow at times. I guess they're speeding it up
- Improved image and video stability - Camera application improvements?

I'm probably one of the few people not bothered by Skype on my N97. I have Skype built into my house phone, so having it on my mobile too might cause some problems.
