It is possible but there has to be someone to write this app.

Wouldn't it be great if your phone battery died, then not only could you not get in your car but you couldn't even phone the AA.

Sounds like a good idea but IR for cars seems a bit weak to me, you need line of sight to have it working. What about BT? Car could be equipped with BT transponder, then handset serves as "keyless" device.
Do you guys know what kind of security mechanisms can be set on BT communication for that matter?

That's exactly why you need security code through BT communication. When someone steals your car keys, he also goes with the car, unless there is an extra code.
There is so much car-jacking nowadays where thieves don't even care breaking your window but go directly for your keys (and your head if you're fast enough...). With a RF remote device, one could add another security layer: you enter your car with normal key but need an extra code from the mobile through BT to completely deactivate the security system, it's discreet as you do it inside the car. For those who care less about security, go for complete keyless alarm and open the car through BT.

If you know how to programme in the source code for an application for the symbian platform, then wouldn't it be possible to make any application? or are there limitations to the source codes? apart from the limitations on the phone.

Starts playing your favorit music.
Starts engine.
Sounds good.
Need a BT computer in your car (combined MP3 player )
How about getting home and yout house 'knows' your coming.
Coffee is ready when entering.
Heater is on
Sound is playing.
Could also open door (off lock)

I used to have a Rover 820 that rolled out of the factory with an IR remote installed for the alarm/central locking.
Oh the dangers of making swooping statements!
MOST cars do not have IR

oh yeah ??/
maybe my mistake :P
sorry.
but isn't that dangerous when the alarm is using ir??
i mean that's very easy to encode the ir transmission ,
unlike the frequency transmitter.
any other has car with ir ???

Hi .
I have a car with demote ir.
It´s a renault scénic and the remote lock is ir.
the software irRemote from PsiNT is very good. I would buy it when released.
But it could be better... if we could costumize the sw... like create a layout with the most used commands... I meen copy the ir from several ir remotes... and assign them to the irRemore butons :fadein:
