Can AVI files be made playable on Symbians?

I know you can convert regular AVI format movies to the MP4 format that is natively recognised by the Symbian default video player (Real Player?..). But it'd be so much easier if you could just copy an AVI file as it is and have it be played directly, with no conversion. Is it possible to install some sort of codec that would make this possible, or is there a player that can do this natively (similar to MPlayer on the PC)? Thanks in advance for any replies.

The AVI is just a 'container' like 'MP4'. So you can always copy the video and audio out of the AVI into a MP4 (and obviously this is much quicker than re-encoding the whole file)

The only problem is the actual audio/visual stream is almost certainly not compatible with the N85.

If the stream has AAC audio you're probably ok.
But the video stream has to be under a specific bitrate and at a specific resolution and profile of either h264 or MPEG-4 ASP.

Most AVIs will have too higher resolution and advanced profiles of h264 and MPEG-4 ASP

Easy just to use your favourite converter

BTW - a phone with a hardware decoder such as the N96 might be more successful in playing the more complex video streams.

Hi,

Install Nokia PC Suite 7.1.30.9, also

For video playback and conversion, make sure that you have the necessary codecs installed on your PC:

MPEG-2
DivX
xVid
QuickTime

Then drag .avi files into phone using Nokia Video Manager, your avi files will be converted into .mp4 and then you can play/view the avi files without any problem
